Never mind celebrating our Euro tournament win, let's sing "Gibraltar is Spanish".

I didnt know that!! always thought it was Calais as lost by Queen Mary

anyway apparently he sold it for 5,000,0000 Livres of which there were 25 to the British £

That meant he got £200,000 which in todays terms is roughly £35,000,000

So basically Dunkirk is worth Hutchinson and Delap

Charles II, like his dad, was perpetually short of cash & he'd probably worked out that getting it from Parliament (or the taxpayer) wasn't a viable option. Dunkirk was also an annual money-loser, given the cost of keeping a garrison there.

Would that mean that Spain cede sovereignty over the enclaves they still have in North Africa?

Britain didn't "take" Gib, it was handed to us by the Dutch before Spain was even a recognised country.
It's bad behaviour from the Spanish but not unsurprising - the Spanish government's attitude towards Gib is horrendous (my best mate lives out there, I get regular updates).

The Spanish completely gloss over their enclaves in North Africa in conversation.

Don't think they would get very far trying to take it back

The British captured it from the Moors in 1704, so it wasn't even Spanish at the time. So we should give it back to Morocco if anyone

Edit: My history was wrong. We captured it from the Moors a few centuries earlier.

That's not quite right either according to the following from Wikipedia, with Castile (from where the Spanish language derives) morphing into Spain subsequently.

"It became again part of the Crown of Castile in 1462. In 1704, Anglo-Dutch forces captured Gibraltar from Spain during the War of the Spanish Succession, and it was ceded to Great Britain in perpetuity under the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713."

The name, however, is Moorish, reflecting their presence in southern and eastern Spain from about the 7th century.

As an aside, I've often wondered why the French don't seem to care about the Channel Islands being British.

No real strategic importance I guess. Gibraltar is a great location to control access to Mediterranean sea and Atlantic in times of war. The channel islands don't offer much in terms of a foothold. The Nazis occupied the islands during WW2 but didn't really give them much in terms of strategic value.

An interesting aspect of the Moorish influence on the province of Valencia is that Elche has the largest palm forest in Europe (a World Heritage site), and Valencia produces rice, which in turn led to paella and other Valencian rice dishes.

EDIT: a English neighbour in the place I sometimes visit near Alicante was offered traditional paella by some neighbours. This contains rabbits and snails, and he spent the meal surreptitiously dropping the snails into a plastic bag below his seat, only to be offered more paella because he had seemed to be so keen on it.

That's certainly true but I don't think we'd be so happy if the Scilly Isles were owned by France, whether or not they have strategic significance.

Being fair to the Spaniards, there is plenty of footage of England fans singing, "Fcuk off Espania, Gibraltar is ours", prior to kick off.

You're not allowed to mention that.
