Help with an old away shirt 18:19 - Jul 17 with 2096 views | Bennytheball | Hi I recently brought a Ipswich shirt online and just wondered if anyone who has an eye for old football shirts can tell me more about it. It feels legit and I’ve seen old photos of the home shirt from around 1983 with the adidas logo without the writing, along with the pioneer logo and UEFA cup final writing under the badge, but can’t locate an picture of the away shirt. Any thoughts?
Help with an old away shirt on 18:23 - Jul 17 with 2034 views | nodge_blue | So Im going to show my age now. I had the blue shirt at high school as my form colour shirt. I don't remember the shirts having Pioneer on them - I don't think the ones you bought from a shop had any sonship on them at the time. Are you saying this is an old players shirt. - which would make it Mariners? Someone may correct me on the above. [Post edited 17 Jul 2024 18:25]

Help with an old away shirt on 18:25 - Jul 17 with 2004 views | GlasgowBlue | The material on the collar looks wrong and the name adidas should be underneath the logo.

Yes my shirt didn't have a collar like that. But Im not sure the shirts sold in the shop did exactly match those worn at the time? Wealso played both legs of the final in blue? Unless some white shirts were made just in case they were needed? and the blue shirt didn't have any sponsorship on the front in the final and the number is different. So I think it looks unlikely. Help with an old away shirt on 18:33 - Jul 17 with 1952 views | Cheltenham_Blue | Didn't we wear the home kit in both legs? I'm sure we did, which makes me question the provenance of this shirt. The writing says 'final' not 'winners'

Be nice to think so! There seems to be so many subtle differences in the shirts from the era. https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/detail/news-photo/alan-brazil-in-action-for-ipswic

So the question is what does it say on alan brazils shirt. If it says uefa cup final then theres a chance the 82 shirt is yours. It would aeem odd to say that and not winners. The number shape on the back looks more consistent with the 82 season.

If you click to enlarge the image it says ‘uefa cup final 1981’. It seems odd that we switched between final, winners and final again in subsequent seasons, along with variations of the adidas logo. https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/detail/news-photo/alan-brazil-in-action-for-ipswic | | | | Login to get fewer ads

We also didn’t have stripes and the pioneer shirt sponsorship until the season after, so the white pinstripe shirts always had UEFA Cup Winners embroidered under the badge. Edit. The shirts from planet blue didn’t have a sponsor or UEFA Cup Winners under the badge. I have one from planet blue signed by the team. The shirt itself was always off white with a brighter white collar. Edit. Edit. I also noticed that my blue replica in the other photo has stripes, no writing under adidas logo and UEFA Cup Final embroidered underneath but is a foreign made reproduction that I got off eBay. I cant see it on my phone. The collar still doesnt look right to me for an adidas shirt of the time. I googled and it looks as if at least some of the white shirts of 82 had a black collar as well. But like you said we may have xhnaged bits.

The shirt with the black collar was only ever worn in our North American summer tour in 1981. They are very very rare.

Help with an old away shirt on 20:23 - Jul 17 with 1404 views | Bluespeed225 | I have two player worn shirts from this era, a 78’ and an 81’. Now, the thing with them both is that they are ‘imperfect’, ie one offs, including a slight indent on the left of the badge level with the horses’ feet, and the word adidas not being level. Shirts seem to be popping more lately, hoping people will spend with the feel good factor still high! An orange pinstripe is up for a grand, and a whole cache of blue pinstripes have recently surfaced from someone who’s parent worked for pioneer, both sponsor logos( they changed 82 season) numbers the lot, £1500:a pop. Anyway, the material of yours and those ‘imperfect’ details make it look like a good’un.I love to see a blue pinstripe with a white v neck that the lads only wore in Florida!

Thanks for the information. The badge does look legit and overall generally has an old feel to it.
