One flu over the cuckoo's nest is obvs a conspiracy because cuckoos don't make nests, so make of that what you will.

...not sure what of, but I'm definitely convinced.

Covid, like the flu will always evolve, we have new flu strains every year and the same will happen with covid. But it is literally the same as the flu and should be treated the same. I seriously can't believe people are still going on about covid lol it's crazy how brainwashed people were by BBC news etc

God we even have some on here.

Still testing negative but have unreal shakes and a fever of 39.6. Mainly posting as I live alone and am feeling extremely sorry for myself.

OK, here we go again...

COVID AND FLU ARE NOT LITERALLY THE SAME...but...yes, we have now moved to a point where from a public health position we should be generally treating them the same.

Covid and flu are different viruses, viruses that mutate, some mutations are very bad, some are less so - but the underpinning virology of the two are different and will always be different - which is why we need (and will continue to need) separate vaccinations.

From a public perception and media representation, there is still an amount of hysteria about Covid, far more so than with flu - yet, as the numbers someone else published in this thread show, the current flu strain in the UK is actually more dangerous than the current Covid strain.

The reason for the hysteria is we are only four years post the worst global pandemic in a century, a pandemic caused by a NEW virus (Covid-19) which when it first spread around the world had a mortality and contagion rate the likes of which no living person at the time had experienced. Many many people died, many of those who died didn't need to die, many of those who didn't need to die did so because of the whole 'its basically the flu/its a government conspiracy' thing.

On an individual level, they both have similar symptoms, when we catch either flu or Covid we can feel really crappy, and some people will continue to die from both the flu and Covid.

One of the main differences between the two viruses is that if you get flu then you will almost always (I mean more than 99% of the time) have some symptoms and will be contagious for 2-3 days; whereas if you get Covid you don't always get symptoms and you will be contagious for 7-8 days. That's because THEY ARE DIFFERENT VIRUSES.

So the argument for still testing for Covid is that it will help to curtail the spread of a virus that is more 'spreadable' than flu.

The big problem is that as a society we have this perception that if you get the flu we should just soldier on. What Covid has show us...and here's the public health plea (BTW - I work in health sector and have some oversight of some parts of public health in my region). WHEN YOU EXPERIENCE EITHER FLU OR COVID - STAY HOME. DON'T SOLDIER ON. DO KEEP WASHING YOUR HANDS. DO AVOID PUBLIC PLACES. DO WEAR A MASK IF YOU HAVE TO GO OUT. DO GET VACCINATED.

Maybe get tested for Covid, but the need to is getting less and less - IF WE STAY HOME WHEN SICK.

At the end of the day, Covid and Flu are similar but different. They both make us feel crappy. They are both highly contagious. They both kill people.

And if you have the symptoms but 'soldier on' then there is a chance you will be responsible for passing either Flu or Covid on to someone that may die from it.

Have I mentioned that if you have symptoms of flu or Covid you should stay home to avoid spreading it...

I mean this question genuinely, why are people still testing for covid? If you're sick wouldn't you just stay home anyway?

Innit. I'm genuinely really surprised to hear people are still testing for it, it wouldn't cross my mind tbh. I've not tested myself for years but I've certainly felt ill at times. I sort of came to the conclusion it doesn't matter what it is or what its called, if you're ill you're ill and should take the relevant precautions regardless.

Of course it matters what it’s called. Are you not aware of Long Covid, or the cumulative effects of repeated infections?

I'm well aware as my Covid symptoms lingered for 6 months in 2021. I'm somewhat immunocompromised from a virus I had as a teenager though, so probably more susceptible to it and its not uncommon that I have had lingering fatigue off the back of common viruses pre Covid too. There's still nothing by way of an effective treatment for it though, not to my knowledge. Whether I've got Covid or any other nasty virus that's knocked me it neither impacts my behaviour or course of action.

In a way yes, but knowing the name isn't going to help you avoid long covid (it may help diagnose it).

I don't know what it's like in the UK, but here in Australia you have to buy the self testing kits at around ten pounds for 3-4 tests - so I can understand why in a cost of living crisis people are less bothered about testing.

The main thing (that clive did acknowledge) is to make sure you respond appropriately when you get the symptoms. If we've learned nothing since the pandemic is that we can all take greater personal responsibility for what we do when we get symptoms (regardless of whether it's flu or Covid) so we minimise the risk of spreading the virus.

Sorry to hear that.

I’m not a medical professional, but assume it’s important for R & D for future treatments that numbers and strains of Covid infections are kept tracked and logged.

That's probably an argument for it, but I'm not even familiar with the mechanism to log Covid cases anymore, or the requirement to do so. I doubt many of those testing are doing anything formal with the output.

In terms of the 'so what', if I go to the expense and effort of testing myself at home and then throw that stick in the bin then it neither benefits me or does anything for the greater good / research as nobody knows about it.

It was designed to work with 5G nanoprobes so we could all be mind-controlled by China but they got it wrong and it only works with old Nokia phones which nobody has anymore.

Whilst not a medical professional I am a senior administrator in a large public health system.

It's impractical and too expensive to track every single case in the community simply to support R&D. It was critical during the pandemic because we needed to adapt public health policies that - to be honest - were mostly being made up on the fly.

Outside of a pandemic situation, the R&D efforts will generally get sufficient information from the data they get from testing by GPs and in Hospitals - or failing that from targeted clinical studies.

To be honest, I wasted too much time in 2020/21 trying to debate with f***wits that I just let it wash over me.

Last time I got drawn into an argument was when trying to defend a poor GP receptionist who was copping some terrible abuse around wearing a mask - but that lead to me getting physically threatened.

To see if I should isolate from family. Got it for the first time about 10 days ago. Wasn’t too bad (had ever vaccine booster), but didn’t want to get anyone else sick so isolated in spare room for 4-5 days.

Good point.

And at least three people I know I still taking precautions because they live with and/or are caring for vulnerable or elderly people.
