Advice from TWTD runners - Hives 10:15 - Aug 23 with 1429 viewsGlasgowBlue

I've been running for over twenty years and never had this issue. However, went out for a 15k on Sunday morning with skin like a new born baby (well a 60 year old bloke). The weather wasn't that great so I put on a hooded running top but halfway through it got very hot. When I got back I had worked up a proper sweat but noticed I was really itchy. Took off my top to find I had broken out in hives. Only where my top and shorts were. Not on any other part of the body. Some looked like bites but the doctor says they aren't bites and I have picked up an allergy.

Had them for 5 days now. Any runners experienced this before and recommend prevention? And how long do they normally last?

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over

I've been running for years and never had it or heard of this before.
As its skin/ heat related, have you tried antihistamines?

It's odd that it's still there but two things struck me.

https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/contact-dermatitis/

I think I suffer from contact dermatitis especially on my arms which leads to raised red skin and tends to be triggered by gardening or holding heavy things in my arms. But it never lasts more than a few hours.

I was always told. Dress for the end of the race. I would question if it was just heat, or a change in detergent. Maybe layer next time with thin wicking tops. Though you do say it was a hooded running top

I suffer from hives or chronic urticaria, not sure my breakouts are caused by running / heat

I think come up from stress

I use Fexofenadine and find it quite effective , the dermatologist I saw said use as many tablets a day as I liked to manage it although the stated dose was 1 x a day, all the lotions and potions were rubbish, a refrigerated tub of avineo was somewhat helpful

I’d seek proper medical advice first though before popping loads of tablets
