The advantages of losing to Wimbledon 13:17 - Sep 15 with 1548 viewspedrail

EFL Cup Third round this week: Southampton play away to Everton midweek.
EFL Cup Third round next week: Villa play away to Wycombe midweek.
EFL Cup Fourth round: Leicester, who are likely to get through the third round against Walsall, would be playing midweek.
EFL Cup Fifth round: A good chance that Newcastle will be through to this round (they face Wimbledon in third round).

In all cases, we will have a full week to prepare whereas our opponent will have a midweek game. Such advantages may make all the difference in our battle to stay up.

The cup competitions had to take a back seat this season. Survival in the PL is all that matters this season. Once established, I would love us to target the cups. just not for this season. Great that our up coming fixtures have them playing mid week. Hopefully they are all taking those games seriously.

Given our squad and the need to try and keep fringe players fit/happy it wouldn’t have been the worst thing in the world to have beaten Wimbledon. That said, proper time on the grass with KM could be priceless in bedding in the new players.

The only thing is how does McKenna keep the likes of Walton, Johnson, Townsend, Woolfenden, Burgess, Cajuste, Luongo, Ogbene, Chaplin, Taylor and Hirst happy and match fit? Especially the defensive players - the front four may rotate to a degree.

Losing to Maidstone was a major factor in us being promoted automatically.

Good point, but I don't think this outweighs the benefits of not having midweek games and of having a full week of preparation for League games. They have all bought into the philosophy that everyone into the squad needs to be ready at all times. The one I'd be slightly worried about would be Johnson who lacked game time and appreciation at West Ham, but I think he'll get opportunities as the season progresses.

Even if a team doesn't take the cup game seriously, it still interrupts the training week and detracts from League game preparation. And first team players still have to travel, sit on the bench, and potentially come on if things aren't going well. And the second string players are the ones who will potentially come on as substitutes in the League game and won't be as fresh.

Sitting on a luxury coach + a bench for a few hours would be very hard for me in my 70s with a history of spinal problems.

Have never understood how it's supposed to be a handicap for superfit elite athletes age 18-35, who are in any case always going to spend a good length of time doing proper pre-match warm-ups, tbh.
