Don’t really get the “we should be beating teams like Southampton” thing 08:28 - Sep 22 with 1319 views | thebooks | And tut-tutting over yesterday’s performance. In terms of resources, long term spending and wages we are starting miles behind everyone else, including Southampton. There are no Lutons or Sheffield Uniteds this time round. Everyone strengthened this season and has a history of Premier League squad building. It was similar last season, but we won by being more tactically astute, fitter and more together than anyone else. We had to fight more, and for longer. I also read someone saying “Sorry, but Wes Burns just isn’t good enough for this league”, when a) he’s actually looked dangerous whenever he’s played and b) he’s played 2 and a bit games. How short are people’s memories? We were playing Forest Green Rovers a couple of seasons ago.
Don’t really get the “we should be beating teams like Southampton” thing on 08:39 - Sep 22 with 1248 views | textbackup | My favourite thing is reading the ‘short memories’ ‘only 2 years ago we were playing X’… like it matters. This is the here and now, what was before doesn’t matter in terms of what we want to achieve now. Ideally Soton away was one that we’d have had down as a real chance to win. Even TWTD can agree on that. We didn’t, but all will take huge joy in that we didn’t lose. Means they are still below us, they still havent won, they would have seen yesterday (at home) as a must win. At times we looked a little sloopy, and like a team getting used to one another. Couple of players weren’t anywhere near their best, but we’ve seen their best, so it’s not a massive concern that they’ve just become bad players. On to Villa, who are going to be tough as hell to beat, might have one eye on their European game, but I still expect them to beat us. A draw would be brilliant

I think to some extent it does matter where we've come from and in how short a time.We are the only team in the division who has not either been in the Prem at least two years, or just bounced back after a single season in the Champ. It does make a difference for squad development. Yes, we spent a lot in the summer (and, IMO, spent well), but it was a large influx of new faces, all of whom have to be integrated and forged into a working team. A bit like changing up a gear too early in the car- it will keep going, but the engine might splutter a bit at the unexpected load before picking up. Town haven't had time to make incremental improvements, adjust and push on. We've had to accelerate from 30 to 70 in a few hundred yards (like pulling out from one of the more old-fashioned right-angle junctions onto the A14).

Yeah fair points there actually. A lot of car references, guessing you spent hours in a car yesterday like I did and it’s on the mind 😂

We will be looking at games like Wolves, Everton, Leicester, Bournemouth for our wins. McKenna however, will be looking at every game as a win. We will get points when nobody gives a chance of getting. It won't always be against the "weaker" teams.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to go yesterday. But I have spent a fair bit of time in the car over the last week or so - while having some trouble accelerating quickly due to a misfiring cylinder.

Over the season you just know we’ll get that massive away win at a big club, and surprise a few at home too. I think my simple little brain is trying to tell me today that West Ham away will be our first win of the season

I thought we were a bit sloopy too... Our Barque was worse than our Bight

If they play like they did against Chelsea, you may well be right!
