Just about sobered up after yesterday 15:38 - Oct 6 with 2558 views | _clive_baker_ | Talk about masters of our own downfall. The 1st was poor from Phillips in the first instance with that under hit ball to Greaves. From kicking off to conceding in <1 minute, shambolic at any level. Rode our luck a bit before their 2nd too, there’s playing out from the back and then there’s suicidal, what Muric was thinking playing short on that one that was cleared off the line I’ll never know when there were other relatively simple out balls. The 3rd was probably the most frustrating of all though, 2-1 down and minutes into the 2nd half, just stay in the game, give them something to defend for the last half an hour and push for a valuable away result but no, comical back pass from Johnson, again poor decision making & execution from Muric and it’s game over. What’s frustrating is 30 minutes in to the game we weren’t just in it at 1-1, we actually looked the better and more confident side. Against a team whose fans seemed desperate to get on their back we made life far too easy, handed them a big fat get out of jail card in a game that otherwise could’ve been problematic for them. Still, hopefully we can learn the lessons from this one and come back stronger from it. We know we’ll have days like yesterday and this season is going to be a proper scrap until the end I think. Every point is a prisoner when you’re chasing high 30’s. The positive in a relegation fight is defeats needn’t be terminal, as long as we can find some wins from somewhere over the next 4 or 5 games to edge towards the point per game run rate. Enjoyable day other than the game though, early train beers, plenty of pre and post match pints in some East London dives (as well as a few nice ones). Ended up in a club which is a rarity for me nowadays. Finally got to bed 22 hours after waking up and feeling a little tender now.

Then after Greaves has the free header that he puts wide,we seemed to turn into a different team and they could easily have scored twice before they actually did get the second. Then we come out 2nd half and it’s as shambolic. The worrying thing for me in general is that teams are not needing to work hard for goals as we’re gifting them with mistakes.
Just about sobered up after yesterday on 16:28 - Oct 6 with 2316 views | LankHenners | Yeah, people will have to accept yesterday will probably happen again a few times more this season. There seems to be a general acceptance that 17th is good this season and we should be happy with it. Fine and I agree with that but this is what that looks like: a fair amount of comfortable defeats on the road with a few draws and an occasional victory with the bulk of the points coming from the home fixtures. Always feels extra annoying to go into a break off the back of a result/performance like that as you've got more time to stew on it but on the flip side it gives McKenna and team plenty of time to get stuck into the hows and whys of what happened and work on it. Every time we've had a slight setback under him we've come out the other side stronger for it. Much tougher at this level of course but we should have a lot of faith he can do it again.

Yeah. I posted this elsewhere earlier but even Newcastle lost 11 of their 19 away games last season. 10 of the 20 teams won 5 or fewer away games. Every game is going to be hard but especially on the road. Realistically, if we pick up 15 points away from home then that's a really decent tally which 'only' needs us to pick up circa 20 points at home.

Well, we need to start wining home games. Yesterday was our first truly bad result in 7 games; let's hope it's a blip although the playing out from the back - especially with Muric - looks near suicidal at times. We really must win at least one of the next 3 games. Hopefully McKenna recognises the issues & has some plans, although naturally he won't make these public. [Post edited 6 Oct 2024 19:24]

I have a theory that where we really lost it was not being "professional" and breaking up their momentum just before half time. We brought the pressure on ourselves, but after the comical goal line clearance we should have had someone go down injured, stopped the game for a minute or two, taken a breather and reset. I'm surprised someone like Phillips didn't do it. I'm sure had Chaplin been on the pitch he would have been on his arse pronto.

I think we have to be happy to call a spade a spade. We’ll pick up points where we perhaps don’t expect them (arguably already have at Brighton) and we’ll lose games where we might dare to think we’ve got a chance. Stood there after 30 minutes, admittedly a fair few pints deep and full of optimism I didn’t know what the next 60 minutes of football was going to bring but I didn’t think it would be that. We seemed to hit self destruct when we had got a foothold in a game that looked destined to be a competitive encounter. Did have a great day though. Beers, Football, loads of pubs, curry house, some bars, ending up in a club near Tottenham Court Road firing G&T’s down us. Got my hands on a cigar at one point too which was quite enjoyable.

"Every time we've had a slight setback under him we've come out the other side stronger for it. Much tougher at this level of course but we should have a lot of faith he can do it again." Agree. I do think some people have forgotten that KM's still learning about this new (to us) league just as most of the squad are. Said on another thread that you can bet he'll have been watching the replay over & over, analysing it to death, working out how to fix the errors & then coaching that to the players. And the int break could be a pos for us there, not a neg - more time to keep practising & for players to get used to each other/work more cohesively.
