Is 4-4-2 worth a try? 03:38 - Oct 20 with 882 viewsThe_Romford_Blue

I totally understand why we played 3 centre backs last season to allow Burns and Leif to use their athleticism to burn up and down the wings. They were able to get in behind teams and use their place and crossing to create loads of chances.

That isn’t happening now. There simply is no space in behind for it to work and Leif in particular now operates as a standard (albeit much improved defensively) left back. So that’s a huge weapon from last season almost entirely gone from our armoury. And you can see it with the lack of chances we’re creating. We could have played for another hour today and we wouldn’t have scored. The Clarke sitter asides, did we have a meaningful attack all game?

So with that in mind, would 4-4-2 not now be worth trying? I think it would be an improved situation on paper for two reasons:
1) it would allow Clarke to play as a proper out and out winger which is where he was superb last season. Stick him on the left and Hutch on the right.
2) it would allow a 30 goal striker last season in Szmodics to play up front in a pairing with a bigger target man type striker in Delap/Hirst. Which coincidentally is the situation that suited SS in recent seasons.

Perhaps not next week at Brentford but at home to Leicester I would give it a go. What’s the harm in trying?

Sorry no. A conventional old school 4-4-2 gets murdered by 4-2-3-1. Out if possession 4-2-3-1 is often 4-4-2 anyway.

4-4-2 is static, favours defensive only fullbacks. How does Davis make the byline when the winger is always in front of him?.

Can we afford two isolated strikers when we need to compete against world class midfields that are already seeking to overload us as it is?.

We tried 4-4-2 at the end of the West Ham game, IIRC. OK, a tough circumstance to play it but it didn't really work. I don't think it would long term either.

I don't

But I do wonder if a flat 4 5 1 would work

Forget about davis previous assists and stop trying to make everything go through him.
Use clarke as a proper left winger. 3 cms. And hutch on right.

But if we are to continue with current lineup. Then I'd just like to see the return of Sammy on left as he helps davis.
Chappers central and hutch right.
I also wondered if hirst in the middle would work but not sure.
I would like Sammy there but clarke isn't the best at helping davis.

No 4-4-2 would be found out easily by any premier team we would be overrun in midfield. At the minute Morsey and Phillips are struggling with the system we play IMO I would personally go 4-3-3 when we are ont the attack and then 4-5-1 when we are defending that we way we would always have 3 central midfielders which would make us harder to break the lines at the minute teams just seem to play through us . Mind you I’ve watched football for 55 years and KM as forgotten more about football then I will ever know
