I saw all 30 minutes of his Town career. Actually I thought it was less.
Steve Stacey.
What a shame.
Felt very sorry for him.

Misses out his greatest contribution to Town history, coining Bobby Robson's nickname, Marty! We spoke to him on Life's a Pitch when his book came out.

I think we paid Wrexham £25k for Stacey, a tidy sum in 1968. Yes, he got injured 30 minutes into his debut against Liverpool & was rarely fit thereafter, although I think he did play a couple of other times, but he'd been signed by McGarry & SBR clearly didn't rate him. He did have a couple of seasons at Exeter.

It is a really good book. Spoiler alert... I cried towards the end...

A panic buy by Bill McGarry when Bill Baxter got injured. Buying a short fourth division full back to stand in for the cornerstone of the club at centre half in the top division seemed a disastrous decision at the time - and so it panned out.

Luckily Baxter soon recovered - and Stacey remained the worst signing in the club’s history until George Burley forced him out of the top ten.
