Musings, hot takes etc 16:57 - Dec 8 with 972 viewsBouncebackIpswich

Liam Delap needs a rest or at least some help. His touch totally deserted him for most of that game and he became a passenger. Szmodics and Delap up front must be worth a look at while we wait for Hurst to come back

Morsy desperately needs to develop his left peg, it's essential for a central midfielder at this level. His insistence to use his right at all times led to him turning into trouble a number of times when if he'd trusted his left he would have turned out of it

Muric just needs dropping. Not much more too it. Why oh why did we let Hladky go

Burgess should be our starting defender from now on. It should be him plus one. Him and O Shea were solid today.

Good to see Wes dropped today and hopefully he will only make sporadic cameos from now on, he just isn't anywhere near the level and we looked so much better with him out the team

Finally, KM. He is starting to appear like the pressure is getting to him. He is making some very erratic and bizarre decisions and inexperience is showing. From far too cautious on Tuesday to too cavalier today. Plus really questionable subs before and during the game. Where on earth were Cajuste and Phillips, why did he leave Delap on so long. Etc. Not sure what we can do about this other than hope he cracks this very very soon.

Overall a very sobering week and survival looks pretty unlikely now, but with the team spirit we have it only takes a couple of results to start a run, we've seen it before so not ruling it out, and maybe it looking like we're dead and buried will relieve the pressure and help players and crucially KM to start performing better

Morsy was poor today; delayed his pass a few times and lost the ball. Delap is being flogged into the ground and needs a rest. If only Hirst could ever stay fit.

We’re likely doomed.

The failure to bring in a third striker has screwed us and has been an issue every summer under Ashton for some reason.

There are too many issues with the team at the moment. We have the top scorer in the Championship and are insisting on playing him on the left rather than his favourite position. Morsy is showing signs of being out of his depth. O'Shea hinders us in possession though is decent defensively. Johnson had a nightmare which, albeit to a lesser extent today, reminded me of his performance at West Ham. He was beaten every time. Delap is trying hard but I think the refs, for some reason, are starting to clamp down on his physiciality and he was burned out before the hour mark. Hutchinson is showing signs of regression as teams work him out; he'll hopefully learn. And as for Muric...

On the plus side, Davis, Burgess, Taylor and, to an extent, Chaplin played well. Perhaps that's the issue - our new signings aren't reaching the heights of those who were here last season (Morsy an exception).

Poll: Who would you play at right centre back on Saturday?

Was that Delap’s 5th booking today?

Edit: No, 4th. Could have sworn he was on 4 already.

He has been booked five times this season but one was in the League Cup KO at Wimbledon.

I think that's all respectively fair.

We miss George Hirst immensely for holding the ball up and retaining possession.

I love Morsy, but he was a bit off today. Perhaps that yellow card threat is holding him back.

The defence as a whole looked okay. I thought Johnson took a bit of warning up. Davis has improved defensively but now seems to be nullified going forward by teams. O'Shea has improved a lot. Burgess was a collosos. Didn't deserve an own goal or to be on the losing team. I still feel he was a bit of a sacrificial lamb to get Greaves in especially with him and O'Shea starting to look like they understood each others game.

And then there's Muric... He's an excellent shot stopper and very good at claiming crosses. He's also almost embarrassingly right footed, is a questionable passer of the ball and is extremely random in his decision making. I know Hladky would have been targeted with crosses, but I can't help but miss him.
