New youth football rules 15:52 - Dec 11 with 4549 views | hype313 | Just been sent the plans for 26/27 onwards. Bit of a mess. Whilst I agree 11v11 isn't ideal for most ages up to U'15s this means that current 12’s will change to 11 a side next season then revert back to 9 a side in 2026 for the other half of the season. They are currently playing 9v9, and then next season they will play 11v11, and then according to the new changes (which are good for the development), it will then drop back to 9v9 for a season and then back up to 11v11. 3v3 or 4v4 seems like a good idea to a point, but then we will need so many more pitches and clubs will have 7-8 teams, which will need lots more coaches, and given not many hands go up as it is to help, I can only see this being a barrier. Anyone else having these conversations?

New youth football rules on 16:31 - Dec 11 with 4429 views | WilbrahamBlue | The grumblings around the new formats are missing the point. Instead of focussing on the clear and overwhelming benefits for the kids staying in smaller teams or on smaller pitches (more touches/playing time = more development) the usual types of voices are trotting out tired excuses revolving around "lack of facilities/volunteers/they'll be 14 before playing 11 a side" etc. The changes are a big step forward for youth football, and they're about the kids, not the adults/tradition/convenience. More age-appropriate formats mean better skills development, more enjoyment and a proper foundation for the game. Yes there are challenges around pitch allocation, more coaches, funding etc but these are not insurmountable and are issues clubs just need to work through. Essentially mirroring the Spanish system which has worked well, hasn't it?
New youth football rules on 16:33 - Dec 11 with 4416 views | Whos_blue | Yes. The whole thing seems a bit of a mess. I coach under 16s so doesn't really affect us too much, but coaches of younger age groups are scratching their heads and have asked the very same question. It would make sense if they were applying this in away that avoids the situation you mention.
| Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness. |

New youth football rules on 16:33 - Dec 11 with 4418 views | redrickstuhaart | Happily i extracted myself from involvement at the end of last season. 3v3 is stupid. Not enough patterns or options. I think 11s is fine for13s on a sensible pitch. Certainly absurd to switch back. Teams fold at 11s if they have small squads. Players move. If it goes back to 9s there will be a lot of bench warmers.

I don't disagree with any of that, far from it, and can see the benefits. But the way its deployed surely could be better, moving age groups up and down is numbers seems chaotic.

New youth football rules on 16:49 - Dec 11 with 4362 views | Marshalls_Mullet | I think these are fine for pro academies, but not grass roots. My lads best position is very likely holding midfielder, and this doesnt really exist until 11 a side, which he wouldve played at U13, but will have to wait until U15. The 4 and 5 a side matches are a farce at the younger ages, and get dominated by 1 or 2 bigger kids. Youre right, we dont have the pitch resources available,

You cant get away from the practicalities of lack of resources at grass roots level. I think the changes are OK for academies, but the benefits aren't mirrored at grass roots. In small sided games, its arguably easier for players to get bypassed. Skills development doesnt always follow on small pitches, you just see bigger kids running half the length of the pitch and scoring from distance.

New youth football rules on 16:54 - Dec 11 with 4339 views | itfcjoe | I've not seen them yet, how will they effect my 2? One is currently an U8, who is 5 a side this season and going into 7 a side next season The other is an U6, who will be going into 5 a side next season. As long as enough facilities and coaching I'm always happy witht he changes as normally well thought through, but hopefully FA can support this and we don't have too many kids caught in a transition like the current U12s as will be very hard to manage

U7/U8s will be 4 a side. U9/U10s will be 5 a side. U11/U12s will be 7 a side. U13/U14s will be 9 a side. **Takes effect in the 26/27 season. So some teams could go up to 7 a side for a season then back down to 5 a side in theory.** [Post edited 11 Dec 2024 17:03]

Girls and mixed is how it is anyway now. A pain for us as we have 8 players, and currently 5 a side - so we’ll need more for next season as U7s and then back to 5s the season after

My response about girls and mixed was in relation to how it is now, based his reference to 'boys' football. I wasn't suggesting it was part of the changes. I probably should have put P.S. instead of 'also'.
