Yes, it originated in Leeds and here's some background.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leeds_Revolutionary_Feminist_Group

I was at Leeds University in 1980 when a female student was killed by the Yorkshire Ripper.

The effect on the female student population was chilling, especially as the killing took place next to a university hall of residence, and I remember being asked to accompany a female student home from the university when it was dark.

Fortunately he was caught a couple of months later.

Thanks, there’s a lot of stuff in the links that I didn’t know.

I lived in Chapel Allerton and Chapeltown during that whole time, went around almost entirely by car apart from daytime shopping and community events - the carnivals in Potternewton Park were brilliant - where I got my love of reggae from!

So sorry to hear you went through that, Ryorry.

The 'shame swaps sides' narrative that Gisèle has brought into the wider discussion is so, so important.

My most frightening experience at the hands of a man happened when I was in my early twenties, late at night on a metro train in Paris. I didn't tell anyone for years, because I was worried people would say I was to blame for getting myself into that situation (shouldn't have travelled alone, in an empty carriage late at night, etc).

For years many women have blamed themselves for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, when they shouldn't feel that shame at all. They were not the person who chose to take advantage of a more vulnerable person and violated their boundaries. The shame needs to swap sides. Communities need to teach their boys and girls clearly and catagorically what is acceptable and what isn't, and shame those who choose to hurt others in this way.

I was on a run through town the other day, and a big group of 60-70 people. I was minding my own business and just chatting with a mate, but just the amount of cat calling of some really disgusting stuff at the girls from random people along the route was a bit of an eye opener - they just have to shut their ears and ignore when people are shouting about them as they go past bus stops and the like

Would legalised prostitution and a national DNA database help with cutting some sex crimes?

Almost certainly the first would I'd think, there's been at least one if not more campaigns for it in the past iirc.

Thought DNA database already exists for convicted criminals?

Sorry, didn't make that very clear on DNA. Should everyone have there DNA logged to stop serial offences.

There is a pattern with sexual predators. They start with smaller stuff, inappropriate comments, gestures, etc, and if they get away with that, some feel emboldened and go that little bit further, inappropriate touching, overbearing mannerisms around girls. That can lead further, if they are not called out. Indecent exposure, groping, up skirting. You know where this is going.

The generally accepted view in criminal psychology is that rapists are not doing what they do for titillation, they do it for power. That's why I don't feel that legalised prostitution would solve the problem as GTSB suggested further down the thread. Serious sexual crime is rarely about men needing to satisfy their libido, it's about some men having abnormal turn-ons linked to power and control. That then could put 'legal prostitutes' in a dangerous position.

Not as lenient as in Norway. If Anders Breivik is not deemed to be a risk to the public in 6 years time he will be released. That means he would served 15 weeks for each murder without taking into account related terrorist offences. In this country minors get longer sentences for a single albeit very serious offence and in The US they often get life without parole.
