'My sons support West Ham and my husband supports Arsenal but they've decided to follow Ipswich now because it's local isn't it. It's quite exciting cos they are doing so well.'

Makes me smile. We are less than 3.5 years from Demolition Man.

That's me, although in my case I lived in Ipswich for 2 years whilst at college, I'd never been interested in football before (age 22-23 at the time) but I caught the local fever!

I started going to Town games when I was at St Jo's. Bill McGarry was the manager then with Sammy Chung as No2. Hardly glory hunting then but we went up to Div 1 the following year. A year later McGarry went to Wolves and a bloke called Bobby Robson turned up after Fulham sacked him, which he only found out about by reading the London Evening Standard (or News)

Tho how many of today's long-term fans were first attracted by the glory of Ipswich Town under Ramsey, Robson and Burley?

Some will fall by the wayside (should we once again fall into the lower divisions), but others will retain the connection and pass it onto their children.

Absolutely. I really do hate it when fans sit in judgment as to the credentials of other fans, and how worthy they are to support Town without insults being thrown as them like “plastics”. It’s just thoroughly distasteful.

I’ve been supporting Town for forty years, I’ve never changed teams, I never will, and my kids support Town. There are fans who’ve been following Town far longer, who have more kids, Grand kids, whatever. We all have our reasons for supporting Town. Copying your dad I guess is deemed the most worthy, but why do people look down their nose at those who have actively chosen to support our fine club?

They don't support anyone. They've picked a team and can happily pick another for a few months. I feel sorry for people like this who will never know the true feeling of supporting a team.

This, this and thrice this.
When I met my current wife 18 years ago, her and her three children all had season tickets for PR.
They all now ‘support’ Arsenal. None of them have been to see them.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

I think the key word is "support", those that turn up just because we're in the Prem & will disappear again if relegated, arent support, theyre just there for the experience I guess, its like being a neutral fan, its a bit hard to get your head around what joy theyre getting from it.

Especially those that arent local, who are no doubt surrounded often by supporters from other clubs, kids especially want to fit in with other kids and feel like they are getting positive feedback from it, so it seems odd theyd go against the grain that way.
