i think finding the money for a one-off emergency is different from finding billions every year to placate a man-baby who'll probably change his demands again tomorrow.

defence is a priority, but so is healthcare, social care, infrastructure etc, all are underfunded due to the low-tax lobby

It’s not just Trump. It’s the way the world is fracturing. The choice is to be made. Treat defence as priority and hope you have enough to be left alone, form alliances or hope for the best on the basis of that nice Mr Putin or Xi or whoever wont determine your thoughts, days and deeds for you.

It’s not me I’m worried about. I’ve had a great time and within normal society constraints have lived my life as I wish most of the time. I’ve been lucky and if it ends soon, that’s ok. I want future generations to have those opportunities too.

Yes, Health care, social care, education infrastructure etc are all important. God knows I of all people know that. So is border, policing and plenty of other things. I just think the way the world is changing, defence needs to be as greater priority as it was before the Berlin Wall felt. The orange baboon is right to stop in particular wealthier European countries leeching off the US.

Low tax lobby? Put a couple of pence on income tax at basic rate, raise the threshold so those on desperately low income are left alone, more than 2p on higher rate taxpayers and go after the wealthy that pay on average less than 10% tax. Close the tax gap. Go after the high end criminals that cost this country many millions every year.

That’d do for starters and be honest. We need these services and better infrastructure. Get those who can afford it to pay more. Despite being retired, that includes me and that’s fine.

A crude analysis and recommendation but the principle is sound in my view.

i'd like to think that people would be willing to pay extra tax, but if you go after the high earners and the right wing media (with many links with putin/trump) would shut it down as they always do.

the only way to get it through would be a national consensus between the main parties and with extremists like badenoch and farage only interested in culture wars and competing to be the most obnoxious/small state, then i can't see that happening

an invasion of the baltic states/greenland might knock their heads together, but i doubt it!

It's extremely hard to build a national consensus if the right-wing press (RWP) is not on your side.
My current observations/opinion of the RWP is that they will burn and destroy anyone who dares to challenge their ideology.
The RWP will rally behind a dictatorial leader who threatens to take over the UK rather than the citizens of the UK.
The RWP are not our friends.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

We live in a plutocracy, the USA even more so. Anyone that threatens that has been and will be crushed if they get anywhere near to power.

I was reading (actually being read to me on youtube) a book from the 40s/50's that in passing talking about a major wealthy character being taxed at 50%, as if that was the norm. Which it probably was when the book was written in the USA.

The writer obviously didn't think that would change in the future, unfortunately he was wrong.

The book is Foundation by Isaac Asimov, if anyone is interested. Although it has been hinted, plutocracy might be in the next book.

I have read them all when I was in my teens but can't remember them at all, so having a revisit.
