False 9 08:18 - Jan 16 with 1511 views | FrimleyBlue | IF we aren't successful in our search for a third striker, what actually makes a false 9 work? I mean could you forget the striker search and concentrate on forward line options and instead of having to think of rotating strikers, subbing like for like etc... What actually makes a false 9 a plausible option instead, that way you're filling the squad with quality in wide, or central positions, but being able to utilise those instead of an out and out striker...

Also so reliant on a possession based approach, which we're just not going to get to any time soon at this level. We need to play to our strengths, we saw against Newcastle how toothless we looked without anyone leading the line. We could barely get out of our half.
False 9 on 09:12 - Jan 16 with 1161 views | Guthrum | Modern no. 9s are so flexible there is pretty much no distinction any more. Delap, Hirst and AAH already play that way, you're more likely to find them hunting the ball in midfield than goal-hanging as a target man. The high press negates a lot of old fashioned striker play, as they'd just be offside all the time.

This. If we can't find a 'presser' in the Delap and Hirst mould, I wouldn't be suprised to see us go for a target man, similar to bringing in Kieffer Moore last Jan. Someone that can hold the ball up when we are under pressure and let the attacking midfielders come into play.

We really need a focal point in the #9 role, big, physical, presses hard, works hard, runs off the last shoulder of defenders, in the channels and stretches defences. Its such a pivotal role in our system and helps create the conditions for the likes of Hutchinson and Philogene to thrive and find space. Hirst did it so well last season, his movement is so good and so many times it was his runs that were creating the space for the likes of Chaplin to find. Delap is perfect for our system, aside from all of the above he's got the quality on the ball as well, such a powerful runner and ball carrier and has a hell of a shot on him. We won't find anyone at his level, but I do think we need another option even if its a loan who sits on the bench more often than not as if Delap gets injured we're a bit fooked. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
False 9 on 09:53 - Jan 16 with 952 views | Stewart27 | KM didn’t like using one in the championship. He won’t use one in the PL. There were calls for Chappers and Broadhead to be tried in this position instead of Jackson when Hirst was injured. Jackson got the nod every time.
