Whats the plan for our starting left side attackers 10:51 - Jan 16 with 1317 viewsnodge_blue

Stating the obvious but we have Broadhead, Philogene, Smoz and Clarke all for that position. Only one can start and one come on.

Are we going to see one go this window?

It would be incredibly hard on Broady as I think he has looked sharp these last few games. His foot work and intelligence have looked strangely more aligned to the prem than it did in the championship.

And Clarke hasnt got started. Theres a player there. Im excited for the Jaden signing but I think Clarke last year was as good. He just needs more game time think. Surely we cant be thinking of loaning him already.

Maybe JP will cover /alternate for Hutchinson on the right for rest of season? That could make sense given Ogbene injury?

Szmodics is a natural 10, only gets started on the left for work ethic and defensive capabilities,

Now Broady is fit, and offers the same, I imagine we'll see Szmodics revert to the 10,

Philogene however, much like Omari, can fit in anywhere on the wings or in the 10, I imagine he's most likely been signed to play on the right where we've lost Ogbene to his injury

Different talents for different phases of games, offers KM more options with how he sets us up in the final third,

Wouldn't be suprised to see Philiogene played occasionally in the hutch roam 10 role, then you've got two that can switch through out games.

Clarke J, looks like he's starting to understand the transitional phases of games but also where he needs to position himself off the ball against attacks.

We're slowly getting to the league 1/champ sub picture where you can switch like for like and it has 0 negative effect on the game.

a niche perspective

Broady has been used in the right sided role more recently, but I think that's largely due to unavailability of others. As you say Philogene could play on the right if Omari is out or rested too. I see it as something like this if we continue with the 'back 3':

Godfrey / Axel - O'Shea - Greaves
Burns / Johnson - Phillips / Morsy - Cajuste - Davis
Hutchinson Philogene
Delap

Leaves Szmodics, Clarke, Chaplin & Broadhead as the competition for those 2 #10 roles. There's versatility across 3 or 4 of those 6 players to play in either, although it looks to be more of a left side bias. I don't think its an issue though and I don't think we'll see any of those 6 depart. 4 will feature every week, and you almost need to work on the assumption that at least 1 will always be unavailable.

We're trying to get back to having an impactful bench mob that's served us so well over the last few years. It's not really about replacing those you've mentioned really in my eyes. I'd have worried for Broadhead if it wasn't for the recent opportunities he's got, and showed deserved

The options are there, but if we're going based on current form and who looks like they're offering the most threat, then it's Hutchinson and Broadhead behind Delap right now.

Having these options will definitely take the heat off playing Hutchinson as much as we have been though. I think the management team will know we can't overcook his minutes in the second half of the season and lose him to an injury as he's our best ball carrier.

I think that's spot on with your last line. This window will be difficult for us to improve upon our starting 11. It's hard to convince players who will add quality to join when in 6 months time, we could be in the Championship, but bolstering our depth on the bench is something we can do now, and hopefully, we are maybe 1 or 2 more away from being set through to the end of the season.

Szmodics will 100% not be playing in the 10 for us. Our 10 drops very deep to create, Szmodics is not a creator, he’s a finisher.

I'd see our '10s' primary roles now broadly like this, but with a lot of flexibility, e.g. Philogene on the left sometimes, Hutch on the right, depending on opponents.

Inside Left 10: Broadhead, Clarke
Central/Right 10: Hutchinson, Szmodics, Chaplin
Wide Right: Philogene, Burns, Johnson, (Ogbene next year)

That allows each position to have a quality swap in in every game like we were doing in the Championship.

If we're playing three at the back more often, then we have a problem getting game time for all of that set of 10s though.
