It's not just our keepers who make howlers!

I think that should be called "doing a Muric".

Correct.

But there is a point at which a keeper who does it too often needs to be taken out of the firing line.

As an aside, Newcastle's organisation off the ball, and speed of counter attack with it, is ridiculous.

Absolutely, this isn't a defence of Muric, more just an observation that keeper cock ups happen even with the top keepers.

Look at half of Arsenal’s goals at the weekend. Man C were all over the place and cocked up playing out a few times. If you’re not perfect with that style, I don’t know why teams persevere with it. Football’s becoming so one dimensional. I blame the stat men, as coaching now seems wedded to percentage football (taking the option that presents least risk). There’s not much room for spontaneity and unpredictability these days. As a spectacle, most matches play to a similar style and you’re just looking for the finest margins as to who can execute best. Not always, but it’s common and making the game pretty dull imo.

The point of doing it is to draw the opposition out. Surely if they are already pressing as high as that, just playing it directly to midfield should reap rewards. It does require a decent pass from the keeper or defender, though.

Funnily enough I was having a similar conversation with someone last night. Top level football is all very clinical - all shape, organisations, patterns, ridiculously fine margins. Unbelievable technical ability, but very little flair.

Every now and then you get a brilliant game, but often it's just teams cancelling each other out.

Wait until Scott Parker's Burnley are in the Premier League.

....amongst "analysts" and some journos that I've heard lately.

Between the lines they are trying to say that the standard of football, in the PL specifically, really isn't as good as it thinks it is.

Specifically I've heard Carragher saying that most goalies are crap, Stuart Pearce saying that forwards are crap at finishing, someone else (can't remember) saying that set pieces, particularly direct free kicks, are mainly plop now and some journo saying that defenders have forgotten how to tackle.

Basically Premier League footballers are pretty crap really.

Exactly that.It takes 5 players out of play immediately. This season I would say even Manchester City have conceded more than they have scored by passing out from the back.
