Hi All

Panic mode!

I have an aqua one 620t tank, somehow the Impella has cracked and I now have no filter.

Tried online and local aquatic shops and best I can get is a new pump for Monday delivery...

Any ideas from any specialists on here if I could simply use a smaller pump just for the weekend until I get Monday's delivery?

A smaller pump is obviously better than no pump, depends on what fish you have in tank, if it’s stocked to capacity. :o)

So, you actually need a powerhead, not a pump as such.

The problem you will have is getting one that fits (attaches) to your filter as different powerheads will likely have different sized connectors.

Where are you, Ipswich?

Hi Lucan, yeah its the powerhead, wasn't sure if I could use any other one until I get the replacement delivered on monday.

You used to be able to just grab spares from most shops but they've really taken away their available spares now.

Im down in surrey

Ok.

Any powerhead will do as long as it fits to the filter. I would take your old one to your nearest specialist aquatic centre, explain the problem and see if you can get another model that fits. If not you might be able to bodge it with a bit of flexible or rigid pipe.

Give me your postcode or town.

If you cannot get a powerhead to fit then the bacteria in the filter medium will die and this is not ideal but worse things happen.

If you cannot get a powerhead to fit I would suggest getting an air pump just so you are getting oxygen into the tank.

Also, get one of these if you can find one (or something similar) they are great little things.

Edit - as for the existing powerhead, all you need is a replacement impeller rather than shell out for a whole new unit.

Hi Lucan, thank you

Just spoken with Lynchford Aquatics in Farnborough, they've asked me to take along my existing pump and filter connections and they're gonna help me build a bespoke set up until my new order comes in on Monday.

Yeah, they know what they are doing, you will be fine there.

I would still suggest investing in an air pump and one of those little sponge filters as a back up in case of similar problems in the future.

Lucan's advice about an air pump is sound. I used to keep fish in a similar sized tank to yours. When I first set up, my local aquatic centre advised me to use an air pump as well as the filter. I liked the idea that if one of them should fail, the tank would still be oxygenated pending a replacement.

Miss Slave says "you da man" (obviously only in relation to fish) and wants to know if you still have a tank. She's a shrimp woman only now (neocaridina).

Shrimps are all the rage aren't they? When I was in the trade they weren't a thing - back in the 80's and 90's

I've got an aquarium at home but only because my daughter didn't want it any more.

At work I have an 8ft aquarium which has sat there without water for about four years, it has finally got soil in it and I hope to find time to finish it off this year.

I have a smaller tank as well at work where I have been raising a colony of blue convict cichlids.

At the rear at work I have a commercial chest freezer which I plan to heat and breed Malawi Cichlids when it warms up a bit.

She just has a bio cube thing now and gave a whole lot of stuff away when we moved and she gave up the bigger tank. This included more than 100 shrimp which I recently saw go for about £5 each...
