Absolutely shocking abuse of state power on 10:12 - Mar 3 with 1081 views | itfcjoe | It's no surprise, I think it would be almost hard to retain these undercover identities without doing so depending on the assignments. Totally wrong of course, and ruined peoples lives and have listened and read a lot about it and the depths they sank to are incredible....but they were doing the job as instructed by the higher ups [and often in such pointless places] who at best turned a blind eye but basically actively encouraged

Lying and pretending to get the information they need. We will have allowed far worse to happen to get the information we want both at home and abroad, all in the name of national security.

The groups were largely left wing, and it is not clear to me that they really represented a threat to national security in the sense that they were hardly the equivalent of Bader Meinhof. In my view, it was just proof that the security services et al at that time were pretty right wing, given the sort of background they had. And don't forget they spied on Harold Wilson. This from Wikipedia. MI5 maintained a file on Wilson under the name of Henry Worthington. It repeatedly investigated him over the course of several decades, before officially concluding that Wilson had had no relationship with the KGB. Nor did it ever find evidence of Soviet penetration of the Labour Party. [Post edited 3 Mar 10:40]
