I don’t suppose there is a plumber here? 10:55 - Mar 18 with 1572 viewsNewcyBlue

I’ve got a leak. I’ve used UV dye, and I can only see the water coming through the ceiling below where the 4 inch waste stack comes through (which is boxed in!). The ceiling below is a false ceiling too, which has been a pain in the backside. I don’t really want to rip out the bathroom floor as I’ve just fixed the underfloor heating and it’s working perfectly! But I guess needs must…

It only seems to leak with a full bath, and when the drain is fully opened. Otherwise it doesn’t seem to leak.

Separate shower cubicle, no leak.

Toilet, hand basin, no leak.

Only a full bath, drain fully open.

I’m assuming the floor tiles adjacent to the boxed in section of the bathroom will need to come up, and the floorboards, to hopefully get access to the 4 inch stack?

You should be able to access this from the false ceiling below. Almost certainly a leak from an incorrectly installed waste fitting from the bath, or from the bath trap, or can be a poorly connected overflow fitting. If it's a pushfit then it might be a twisted rubber seal. Can also be a cracked waste pipe. Should be a simple job to locate & fix. Is the bath free standing or boxed in with a removable panel? If it the panel then remove this first.

For a few quid you can get a shufti-scope.... a little cctv and flexi probe

Screwfix have these, other brands/retailers available

https://www.screwfix.com/p/refurb-stanley-inspection-camera-with-2-1-3-black-whi

Drill a discrete access hole somewhere and have a look.

On one house I worked on, mice had eaten through the waste pipe.... apparently the plastic is like a recreational drug to them

It’s free standing with a panel around it. The bath waste has been replaced to where the pipe is that goes to the waste stack (appears to be solvent jointed).

I can’t feel any water along the pipe. The water appears to accumulate at the bottom ceiling where it meets the boxed in section of the waste pipe.

Yeah I drilled a hole in the boxed in section in the kitchen. Couldn’t see much.

Went up through both ceilings, could identify the pipe from the bath, which looked dry. It’s definitely not travelling along the pipe and going down through the floor / ceiling as it’s bone dry for as far as I can see and feel.

I can hear gurgling sometimes, which would tell me there is some air getting into the pipe, and I have found a small hole in the pvc pipe where floorboards had been nailed on, although this isn’t leaking.

I think I need to start lifting the floor.

Have you checked the plughole seal/seating (inc the overflow, if connected) and also that any screw together joints are tight? Find these are common issues.

Less likely to be the seals around the bath if it only happens when emptying and not an over-bath shower.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

I have one of those and they are very useful when chasing leaks in confined spaces.

p.s. Where the leak comes through may not correspond to where it is getting into the space above the ceiling.

Has it been correctly installed in the first place? You mentioned the word gurgling, which usually means waste pipe sizing is incorrect. The help with that, fit an anti vacuum trap to the basin waste. This “might” actually help solve your leak issue as it will help to increase the water flow.

Yes, "Pulling on the Siphon" which is not as vulgar as it sounds

Might need a Durgo

Screwfix only listing 110mm, but they are also available in 40 and 50mm

I have found a small hole in the top of a pvc pipe from the bath waste, it’s from where a floorboard nail was.

Otherwise I cannot see a leak, and am currently working on the assumption it’s on the back of the 4 inch waste stack which is boxed in. I have seen some water behind this on a copper pipe after draining the bath.

Everywhere else is dry, it’s bone dry beneath the bath, bone dry on the PVC pipe between the bath and a T piece going to the stack.

Difficult without seeing it. As a quick fix apply some duct tape over some silicone to the hole. What size pipe is it?

I fixed a crack in a plastic washing machine tub with no more nails and a piece of rubber glove (marigold, not nitrile type) - courtesy of a YouTube video. The repair lasted four years and outlasted the rest of the machine. I can recommend a similar home made patch if a hole has been discovered.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.
