Boeing and Trump Sixth Gen F-47 Fighter 23:10 - Mar 21 with 1131 viewsChurchman

Interesting announcement that Trump has awarded the F-47 contract to Boeing.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/mar/21/trump-boeing-fighter-jet-contrac

Boeing lost out to Lockheed Martin in the production of the 5th Gen F22 Raptor. Its offering just wasn’t as good. Ugly looking thing too.

Now was Trump’s award political and palms greased, given Boeing’s woes in commercial aircraft production? There’s certainly been no prototype ‘fly off’. Given that Boeing can’t even replace Presidential aeroplanes without delays, cost overrun and tech problems, I’m not sure this bodes well for them.

Given America is fast becoming a dangerous unstable state that’ll probably share its tech with its Russian friends, it makes the development of Typhoon replacement by U.K. Japan and Italy all the more important.

no Boeing didnt lose out to Lockhead Martin on the F22, it was the Northrop F23 in the advanced tactical fighter face off.

youre thinking of the F35 Lockhead Martin which beat the Boeing X32 in the joint strike fighter choice for the replacement for A10,F16,F18 and Harrier, and whether weve ended up with the better of the two platforms is up for debate.

the reality is the F22 is stupidly expensive, its the most expensive plane ever built, which is great for Lockhead Martin, not so great for American tax payers, kind of why they only built around about 200 of them and are expecting to begin retiring them in 5 years. Meanwhile the Boeing B52 is nearly 75 years old, theyve built over 700 of them, and it looks set to continue flying.

and if youve only realised now government defence contract awards might not be based on the best capabilities of the supplier, then Ive got some bridges to sell you, unless you really think Barrow in Furness is the best place in the entire world to build submarines...

Yet the F47 is projected to cost more than double the F22. Which given its a currently an estimate means it could end up considerably more expensive than that.

Value for money isn’t a consideration in this sort of game.

I know Trump is full of it and no one can believe what he says but he says NATO doesn't spend enough then said they would "tone down" the planes by 10% if selling to allies.

Idiot.

Truly impaired.

Yes, you are right. I was thinking of the JSF when posting about Boeing.

In terms of better, the capability of the F35 is not in doubt and plenty who’ve bought it clearly agree.

As for contracts, no, history tells you there are countless examples of contracts definitely not always based on the perceived abilities of a supplier.
