If I recall correctly the first season or two after being introduced they had the 3rd from bottom play the the 3rd in the league below … or something possibly close to that.. I wonder if that would be a good one to resurrect just for this season ?
Perhaps. I haven't seen anything of Burnley... but given how our reserves took apart 5th placed Coventry at their place with little issue, I wouldn't say "no hesitation". I also said a one-off game (I was thinking at Wembley). But of course we don't know what the rules would be in this hypothetical situation.
Think Burnley (or alternative) would take the normal playoffs myself and that it would be a no-brainer for them. We saw how comfortable the semis were for Leeds and Southampton last season. Two-legged ties are very manageable when one team is significantly better than the other; we've seen this consistently in European competitions for years. If they navigate that as the big favourites they would be, they'd then be favourites again in the final.
People are down in the dumps but perhaps not everyone has learnt the right lesson, which is that 90+ points in the Championship guarantees very little at this level. Burnley and Sheffield Utd are slightly worse than Leeds. Leeds are slightly weaker than last season's vintage. Last season's vintage lost both league games and the playoffs to Southampton. Southampton strengthened substantially in the summer, fixed their weakest link by far of Bazunu in goal, and it's earned them 9 points so far lol.
We would be a much sterner challenge for the Championship top 3 than 4th-6th would be.
