No player in the Premier League this season has made more successful ball carries than Omari!

That's good.

Poll: New hobby suggestions for NeedhamChris.

I do love the guy, so I'm not trying to mock this stat, but purely out of interest, what constitutes "successful"?

A carry is 'carrying' the ball for at least 5 metres.

It's successful if you then retain possession, i.e. find a team mate.

I think it's a perfect demonstration of his role in the team, and to be top of the Premier League in that stat is pretty impressive for a team in the relegation zone!

That’s because other teams ping the ball quickly and accurately between players , we are very limited in that respect …….unfortunately.

Just to ying and yang this thread, no defender has been beaten on more 1 on 1s than Ben Johnson.

Trailing vapour since 1999.
Poll: Should Gav and Phil limiti the number of polls?

Wonder if there’s any similar stats about Muric, I haven’t seen one on the forum

I really don’t get why some people have to look to put a negative spin on every bit of positive detail, however small it is, as is demonstrated by a couple of the replies here

That's an amazing stat. Do you know where it's from out of interest? Opta puts Brighton's van Hecke with the most carries (600) and most distance carried (6206 metres), with Omari in the top 50 but some way behind (323 and 4260 metres). Same story for progressive carries and distance. Omari is third in our team for successfully dribbling past players, behind Enciso and Clarke.

Is it maybe carries of a particular distance that he has the most of? Would still be an amazing stat and not something I've picked up from watching, I must confess (I've generally felt we spend more of the game watching the opposition's best players carry the ball aha).

It’s definitely a trait of his game, particularly away from home. He dribbles well and his decision making has improved a lot. He tends to then play it wide from the 10, perhaps at the expense of trying a more threatening pass if we were to be over critical. Personally, I think it’s a big compliment to him and his game.

The problem is, he carries it more than the 5m then turns and passes back to the guy behind him!

Is this an example where stats are becoming too significant in the game. And some even get excited about them. What happened to the good, old-fashioned joy of seeing exciting football?
Omari is still learning the game and has found this season a struggle af times. We don't need pointless stats to see this.

It is an impressive stat, especially in the context of a team that doesn't have much possession.

However, I do take the points that others are making as to the limitations on this statistic. Which is fine. The stat is what it is, and it is there to be interpreted, rather than to purport to be some sort of divine truth about the game.
