Can I trouble people to sign this petition? 16:58 - Apr 3 with 1302 views | Cheltenham_Blue | It was recently revealed by The Atlantic that Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, has used LibGen, a vast database of pirated material, to train its AI models. So meta have sold our images to LibGen. Did you or I authorise third party uploading of our photos to meta sites so they could sell it on?...definitely not. I have never uploaded my photo archive to unsocial media but it's all there. https://www.change.org/p/protect-authors-livelihoods-from-the-unlicensed-use-of- Thanks.

Effectively you still own it but by uploads you've given them rights to use it in certain circumstances. Not sure if training AI is one of them though

The petition isn't about what you upload to Facebook. It's about the stolen work that Meta are selling to LibGen and using to train its AI. [Post edited 3 Apr 17:51]

Just trying to understand the issue here. You say Meta have used libgen to train their AI, which if it contains illegal images (from what I've read books are a big thing). That I get Then you said about Meta selling our images to libgen, which you said that this isn't about what we upload to Facebook? isn't that where the get our images from?

No. The pirated information is in the LibGen database, which has material from everywhere. It’s explained in the letter in the link the OP posted. “Yet the evidence reported in The Atlantic article supports the allegation that, instead, decisions were taken at the very highest level at Meta, to download and use the Library Genesis database (“the Lib Gen database”), which is one of the largest pirated collections of books available globally, containing over 7.5 million books and 81 million research papers.” [Post edited 3 Apr 19:22]

So Meta haven't sold our images then as the OP suggested? Just utilised libgen to train it's AI
