While i hope its more than just words, its easy for him to say this at the minute as there are no offers on the table. I refuse to take the statement as anything other than just words and the reason for that is i dont think my heart could take it if he leaves this summer after fully buying into what he said.

In a week when it’s become known that Delap has a clause in his contract, you don’t think KM would have something like that also?

Delap and McKenna entirely different propositions. Delaps clause could have been insisted by player or even Man City where we had no bargaining power or other means of motivation to him to sign. McKenna was already here and doing well, being paid well but was getting a massive pay rise whilst already contract. The club might have allowed an escape clause in it but it wouldnt have been set by them, but by McKenna and to me that would be McKenna saying I’m not confident in myself and bargaining from a position of weakness rather than strength which doesn’t sound like him. Could be wrong but again just my thoughts but either way I’m not as worried for next season by him going as I was for this season as he already has the bigger contract, is a year more settled, but has unfinished business in that he hasn’t done what he wanted in keeping us up. To me that would be biggest motivation for him staying as if he is driven as what he seems then he himself will be his biggest critic and will want another crack at the whip to show the world what he is made of. | | | |

I understand your sentiment, but completely disagree. Does this guarantee he stays for next season? No. However, on the balance of probabilities it suggests it’s now very likely. Why?
Anyone who has studied human psychology understands that to read an emotional response it is important to listen carefully to the language used, the tone of the response and to watch the body language. All of these suggest that the reply from McKenna was genuine, not a platitude to mask any true intent. Contrast it to the response to the Delap question - he doesn’t expect Delap to be here next season. Both can change in the coming months, as circumstances dictate, but I know where I’d put my money in both cases right now.
It’s easy to be cynical and disbelieve what someone says, but it doesn’t take blue tinted glasses to see the positives in how McKenna responded to the question. | | | |
