Rose is incredible tee to green but is like a 15 handicapper putting. Has ever been thus.

Grrr…putting is the bane of my golf game.

I play off a 17 handicap, with:
- the driving game of a 6-7 handicapper
- the mid iron game of about an 16-18 handicapper
- the short game of a 10-12 handicapper
- and the putting of a 28-36 handicapper

At the weekend,I hit my second into a 540 yard Par 5 about 50 yards short, chipped to about 8 feet and three putted for a bogey. Does my head in.

And yes I’ve had putting lessons, tried different putters and different grips. None of it makes the slightest difference.

Is your problem that you 3 putt too often, largely because your first putt is hit too hard or too soft? That could be an inconsistent stroke, or lack of feel.

I played off about 7-8 a couple of years back but I was bad at putting for years (like you had a really good short game and driver game). To be honest I just found putting boring and boring to practice. Main thing is to stop rushing. Always look at the hole from behind and from where your ball is and always mark your ball just as a routine (forces you to slow down).

Make every putt a straight putt (i.e. pick the spot you are putting to (line and weight) and just start playing like that.

Defo helped me. Otherwise you are just rushing and going into it expecting to mess it up on the green.

Gosh, you can hit a golf ball alright. And that’s half the battle. Two shots to 490 is good going by anyone’s standards. Even when I was young and could hit a ball I was happy with that sort of yardage. 250+ with a driver, 200 with a three iron was my ‘go to’ - three wood didn’t really work for me. No idea why other than I had a natural swing that irons seemed to suit.

But despite being garbage I’d get around most courses in between 80 - 90 on stroke play just about every round. I wish I could now. Im total cack. Age, beer, nosebag have not been a good thing, golfing wise. Oh well.

Enjoy it for the laugh though, have three golf trips coming up, three golf societies to embarrass myself at and just bought a new driver for £280. I must be mad or hope springs eternal!

I have to be fair and say it was a bit wind assisted.

I played a lot as a teen but then life just got in the way. I restarted again a couple of years ago and have just turned 50. I can consistently hit my driver 240 yards with no wind and my 3 Hybrid about 190-200 yards. A normal round sits in that 88-92 range in stroke play - but more often or not that includes at least 4-5 three putts. My best is an 82 and that was on the very very rare day my putter was on fire.

Nothing wrong with a bit of help from the elements!

The key is playing regularly, which I just don’t do now. Back in the 90s I was playing a lot more. My dad was a member at Waldringfield and we’d play every fortnight the day after the football, day of an evening match, sometimes the day before too if I could get time off work.

We’d play there, Felixstowe or Seckford usually, though I’ve hacked around a lot of the Suffolk courses including Rushmere and Hintlesham. I’d also play other weekends and weekday early birds etc in the South East. Lots of happy memories.

I wish I could play better than the total rubbish I do now. There’s a certain point, standard wise, with that game where you feel like you are beginning to play ‘properly’. With your scores, you will know what I mean. Enjoy it!
