'Points lost from Winning Positions' is a fact but also a statistical nonsense 17:07 - Apr 25 with 886 viewsBlue_In_Boston

One of the most annoying stats that Sky and the like love to throw out there.

For us losing at home to Bournemouth accounts for 3 of them, as does going 1-0 up early doors at Manchester City. Hardly the same feeling of despair at points tossed away.

Isn't any stat potentially nonsensical until it's employed to bolster a given argument?

I don't think its nonsense just because it encompasses different scenarios. That's like saying three points against Chelsea is not the same as three points against Wolves. The stat is over the whole season so it's pretty fair

Against man c we held a winning position for 5 minutes from the 7th minute, against afcb for 66 mins to the 87th. If either could be treated as 3 points lost, it's the one where we got to 3 minutes plus added time in a winning position. That was a fine margin.

I was there when McKenna's ITFC won in the Premier League at Home. Fewest home wins and equal most home defeats in a season in ITFC history.

Agreed. Going in at half time 2-2 v Brentford and then losing that one is very different to losing at City after Szmodics early opener.

Another stat to pick holes in, if it doesn’t for your narrative .

Yes I always thought it's a bit of a strange stat.

Yes it means you throw away leads but as you said, some are totally different.

Also, if you're so bad you rarely take the lead, you're going to not be very high on that stat.

Twelve months ago, we were all quite fond of the stat of the points we’d won from losing positions.
