Watching Palace v Forest 20:28 - May 5 with 991 viewsIllinoisblue

Fa cup finalists vs champions league chasers. Thinking of our narrow 1-0 defeat away at Palace. And the narrow 1-0 defeat away at Forest. And the narrow 1-0 home defeat to Palace.

We almost had a season.

The common thread there was that we didn’t score in any of those games. Goals win games and we haven’t done that consistently enough this season.

And the 1-2 at home to Southampton or the 0-6 mauling at home to Man City?

The league table tells a story........

Our defensive record is our biggest concern in my opinion

I think we've got two big problems...

1. We don't defend well enough. We are far too easy to play through, and nowhere near good enough at dealing with crosses.

2. At premier league level, our play out from the back is not good enough, leading to rapid turnover of possession, and more pressure. Our MO is to transition quickly to create openings, and when we can't do that, we're a bit stuck.

these two things were also noticeable in the Champ.... we conceded a lot of goals for a team that won so many games, but also we struggled against two types of teams... those with a really good energetic press ( eg Leeds), and those that sat in a low block. Very few teams could do those well for 90 minutes though, so we were often able to overcome them. Will be interested to see how improved we actually are when we are back in the champ.

Of course we haven’t been good enough. Just pointing out against two much better than average sides, in three of four games we weren’t outclassed at all. The glaring advantage palace and Forest have over us is physicality and athleticism.
