I was thinking the same.

I thought they priced the pair beyond what we were willing to pay. Who was the other one? Where Ward is now shows he was probably worth the price they put on him.

keeper was Stephen Henderson. I think personal terms not being agreed was the factor for not signing Ward and Henderson. What happens when you try to sign people on the last day of a transfer window. We had Henderson in on loan for a while after he signed for West Ham. Pearce went to Leeds. So we missed out on all three.

I suspect the "trying to sign people on the last day of a transfer window" is rather more nuanced than that. I am sure we had been chasing them for some time through the window. Clearly we either didn't have sufficient funds or didn't rate them highly enough. I remember thinking at the time that we were being held to ransom for them. It felt reminiscent of over-paying for ex-Sunderland players.

Throughout the whole saga I always had the feeling he was doing anything he possibly could to avoid coming here.

Was told a little while afterwards that a lot of the shenanigans around Ward was nonsense. We had been interested but what was being fed to the papers and Sky about our continued interest was his agent trying to up the terms on offer at Palace.
