Not an uncommon name on the western fringes of Suffolk in old census and parish records.
Ath is a place in (a French speaking area of) Belgium, so an immigrant family may well have been from ("de") there, hence De Ath, rather than Death. Was in a cloth trading area, so may well have had medieval links with East Anglia. |
I always thought it was a made up name by Terry Pratchet, never realised it was a real surname |  |
