Trump administration cancels funding for mRNA bird-flu vaccine 08:25 - May 30 with 1416 viewsStokieBlue

This is pretty bad for two reasons:

- Bird flu is spreading rapidly across the globe (especially in the US) and is a very real contender for any future pandemic. It's currently infecting dairy cows in the US.

- The cancellation seems to be based on a narrative around mRNA vaccines rather than actual robust scientific evidence which is a real shame as mRNA vaccines have massive potential. Making decisions based on narrative could be a real problem for everyone down the line.

Crazyman Kennedy is vaccine averse. Basically meaningful research within the US could well be finished.

They’ll be responsible for the deaths of an awful lot of people. Oh well at least Trump has a nice new plane, or should I say bribe, to make America great again..

Very interesting, far right political parties around the World seem to be massively anti-vax in general, not sure why, maybe it is just the uncaring attitude of that it costs money and does not immediately make a difference to them. But it does to future generations.

I think it's more the case that they rely on a hard core support base who are into anti-vax conspiracy theories. The kind of people who swallowed Wakefield's line on MMR and autism, leading to outbreaks of a preventable disease like Measles in the modern, developed world.

Those who will lap up any kind of alarmist and conspiratorial narrative without examining the "evidence" very closely, to explain away their socio-economic woes in any terms other than the greed-driven money-grabbing practices of poorly-regulated (and often badly-run) businesses and their allies in politics.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

In these situations I like to ask,
"But what would Katie Hopkins say?"

"They break our legs and tell us to be grateful when they offer us crutches."

Surely with Birdflu you're better off funding/finding a cure for the birds?
Stop it in the brids you don't have to worry about them spreading it and thus require a vaccine for humans. Kill things at the root of the problem not the end of it.

Inoculating the entire global wild bird population (not to mention other animals now it has crossed over) is a pretty big task. Unless you do that, it will continue to spread.

More practical to catch it at the interface with humans.

That simply wouldn't work:

- Bird population is too large and too transient
- How do you catch and vaccinate all the birds?
- There are other reservoirs of the virus
- Many of the variants won't be transmittable to humans so why focus on those?

Why would you prefer to vaccinate a large population of birds versus a much smaller population of humans? What's wrong with vaccinating humans?

Sounds from the article that they are looking at vaccinations when it comes to the egg-producing poultry population but that would probably be the about limit of the use of such vaccines. In the meantime, it seems sensible to be researching human vaccines to cover the eventuality that it becomes a problem that affects humans in a widespread way.

Wow, apart from the FACT that vaccines probably contain a 5G tracking microchip that alters your DNA, probably nothing.

Just in case your thinking of countering my YouTube research with peer reviewed medical papers. You should note, I've wrote fact above in capital letters. So its impossible argue with.

The hostility to mRNA vaccines comes through in the article but it was such vaccines with turned out to be the most effective vaccines for Covid, and meant that the more traditional Oxford vaccine rather fell by the wayside.

I didn't say kill the birds, I said find a cure that could be used for the birds. In other words stop the problem at source

As it is we are already killing millions of birds to stop it spreading. Even if they find a vaccine for humans, I bet that won't stop them from killing millions of birds to stop the spreading. Humans will still worry if it continues spreading it will keep mutating.

How do you suggest we track and treat millions of wild birds? Just have your jabs for the small number of viruses which cross over, fannies.

When we're finished vaccinating the wild bird population of the world, maybe we could move onto bats, and then mosquitos.

The attack on science and academia more generally is rather short-sighted.

This from the Guardian.

Max Planck Society, one of Europe’s leading research bodies, has seen a threefold surge in applications from US researchers following the Trump administration’s attacks on higher education in the US, Reuters reported.

The German state-backed network of research centers received over triple the amount of applications from the US this spring compared to last year in its latest call for early-career scientists looking to set up their own research labs.

“What’s interesting is the number of applications from other parts of the world remained constant,” Patrick Cramer, president of the Max Planck Society, told Reuters. “If you look at which institutions these applications are coming from, you see almost half are concentrated at five institutions: Harvard, Stanford, MIT, the National Institutes of Health and the University of California.”

The flood of applicants comes at a time of concern over a potential American “brain drain” where scientists and researchers in the US are considering leaving the country to pursue foreign research opportunities.

Changing tack, I had heard Trump refer to it as the One Big Beautiful Bill but didn't realise that that is what it is called.

The following link provides the current text of the Bill and section 1 provides as follows.

"Section 1. Short title

This Act may be cited as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act."

https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/119/hr1/text

Such a nonsensical and clearly political short title would not be permitted by the House authorities in the UK Parliament, and this seems further proof to me that (as the Economist Intelligence Unit has determined for some time) the US is indeed a flawed democracy.
