Out of interest Joe, how has this tournament been perceived by the US media as well as the average US sports fan? I think that I’m correct that soccer has recently overtaken ice hockey in terms of average attendance so the sport must be gaining in popularity over there. But I’m guessing that over there different sports are more popular in different areas of that vast country.

How have the US managed to make an already disaster of a tournament.. even worse on 19:53 - Jun 19 by Wallingford_Boy | Are you serious?! Storms in the area is definitely no reason to stop a match, if they did that in England, we’d never finish a season! Three times in two days. |
I was at the England world cup game in Miami some years ago that was stopped because of lightening. Believe me, you want the game stopped in those conditions. [Post edited 20 Jun 10:14]

More ferocious storms than UK some with almost constant lightning strikes. Regular loss of life to these storms. No way you should play football in them.

Do you not remember the match suspended during the Euros in Germany because of that massive storm? SB

How have the US managed to make an already disaster of a tournament.. even worse on 02:48 - Jun 20 by Tampa_Florida_Blue | Having lived in england for 40 years, and the last 20 years in USA, I can assure you the summer storms are like nothing England gets. The rain and Lightning is life threatening. Not only can it be rain, very often it comes with large hail the size of baseballs, and wind gusts at tropical storm speeds. |
Yes, I know that was the point I was trying to make to the original poster.

I will answer a little more broadly as we are a year away from the World Cup. So outside of the NBA finals, June is actually deadtime in US sports, so it has a chance. Last summers Euro's got really good TV numbers last year over here for example, so it is growing. I don't think its more popular that Ice Hockey week to week though, probably skewed by the Seattle and Atlanta attendances. The Premier League has a big following here and not just with expats, other international leagues are also watched. Outside of a few markets the MLS is still pretty hipster and niche but there is still so much money in it! Probably why a lot of Americans who have some cash but not billions are looking to the lower leagues in the UK. Just as an example to establish the San Diego MLS team cost $500M. Anyway I digress. This tournament is being carried by TNT and DAZN, the latter being a subscription. I will be honest I don't think that many people know it's going on outside the the true "soccer" fans. I personally think its a complete money grab but with the prize money clubs want to be there and take it more seriously. Maybe it's good for the viewer if they are starved of football this summer but I don't think it's great for the sport long term. They have picked some markets where footy will have a big following like Miami and Southern California and some South American clubs have traveled in good numbers or their expats have turned up. Some group games in NFL stadiums (not sure why didn't use modern MLS ones that have 30k seating) have looked sparse. Some grounds look decent depending on who is playing. I think the knockouts might gain traction but I haven't watched too much of it. A year out from the World Cup and not much is going right from a US perspective, Poch not setting the world alight, whatever anyone politics, the outside view from a visitor perspective is not great, no one is talking about it with an excitement yet. All that said, when I first moved here I was amazed how the entire country got wrapped up in the Brazil 2014 tournament and how into everyone was. Helped they got out of the group of death, I had a lot of jokes thrown my way as we didn't even get to the knockouts. When it arrives it will be passionately backed no doubt. You're right about the geography (as I alluded to with SoCal and FL) but there are some major cities that are Basketball or Baseball over NFL and states that don't have pro teams like SEC schools in the south, College Football is basically religion, well along with actual religion.
