Category One - what's changed on the recent progression front? 16:24 - Jul 11 with 1742 views | monty_radio | According to Phil's report, our failure to achieve Cat 1 in 2014 was due, in part. to a "lack of players having come through into the first team in the immediately preceding years". Apart from Wolfie, who's ancient news on that front, and (arguably) Cam Humphreys, where is the evidence of our improvement in bringing players through? Such as Boniface, who has made the bench, wasn't initially from our own academy. So, who am I missing? * I've remembered Harry Clarke and El Miz who. I suppose you could argue, we brought through, but , then again, not for our own use. [Post edited 11 Jul 17:12]

And lucky they have changed too, as we’ve gone through quite a barren spell in that time.

I'm still reading: " lack of players...into the first team in the immediately preceding years" - so, I have to assume that player progression is no longer a criterion, and, having now read through what the FA actually say, I think that seems to be correct. There is certainly a huge emphasis on provision that seems to open the door for the wealthy to what we actually witness: the buying up, stockpiling and selling on of any youth prospects. Category One - what's changed on the recent progression front? on 17:52 - Jul 11 by PhilTWTD | I assume player progression still comes into it to some degree and actually the academy hasn't done badly when it comes to players across the divisions in recent seasons. As Tristan Nydam said when I spoke to him for the Klug piece, there's probably more players throughout the top five divisions than at any time, two playing in the Premier League last season. An Outstanding Football Coach 2nd Jul 2025 14:29Legendary academy coach Bryan Klug left Town last week having brought through countless young players over the past few decades and TWTD spoke to a handful - Kieron Dyer, James Scowcroft, Ian Westlake and Tristan Nydam - to find out the secrets of his success. 30 |
Those two being Wolfenden and Downes?

Indeed. And Tawanda Chirewa also with a Premier League club although without making an appearance.

It must be a very insignificant criteria. It’s been 8 years since either Woolfie or Downes were development players.

I'm pretty sure he's come off the bench a few times for Wolves, seem to remember seeing him come on in a game on the telly. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

True, they're a bit ago but I think the point stands about more recent years that there are plenty of players who have come through the academy playing at decent levels, which would have counted towards the audit as it was a decade ago and assume counts for something in the current one.

So I was right and you were wrong! Blimey, a life achievement I can finally brag about, other than being the most handsome man in Cambridgeshire, obviously. [Post edited 12 Jul 0:35]

Category One - what's changed on the recent progression front? on 06:36 - Jul 12 with 461 views | PioneerBlue | I’m assuming the business case says as Cat 1 we have to invest in the infrastructure in a way we didn’t before and the outcomes will be better as a result. I’m also assuming that at the lower age levels it’s unlikely we will attract any more or differnt talent to what we would have done anyway because that will be as much about parents and living location and their ability to help their child logistically. Im assuming having probably there may be marginal benefit in being able to attract the edge cases in order that they don’t join Nodge or WetSpam now given the PL2 opportunity is there. I also assume that helps retain in the upper age groups with that league level access open to the players. Lots of assumptions but it would be nice to have a stream of 5-30m players come through our system rather than someone else’s for a change.

Category One - what's changed on the recent progression front? on 07:03 - Jul 12 with 415 views | Churchman | Let’s face it, under Evans our youth development rotted away like everything else. Could it have been done better in the past couple of decades? Yes. A lot better. If you look at the players say Sunderland have brought through and retained in recent years in size, strength and quality that’s something we should be aiming for. It’s going to take years to bear fruit and it may not even work given competition from particularly London clubs and Norwich who are far ahead on this sort of stuff, but it’s well worth a try.
