I like the sound of Azor Matusiwa, based predominantly on our history of Dutch players and a love of holding midfielders.
Question though - if the undisclosed fee is (as reported) €9m, why have we got him for less than Rennes paid for him (reportedly) in January 2024? That figure is quoted as somewhere between €13m and €15m. I don’t understand why they’d accept less when he was just over one year into a four-year contract.
Is it simply the player’s desire to play in England?
No agenda with this question by the way, just confused.
French football finances are a bit of a dumpster fire. Signed a big TV deal (still far smaller than the prem) not too long ago and then the TV company went bust or backed out on the deal and they've had to settle for far less money than all the teams budgeted for. Now the latest TV deal with DAZN is ending early and they are buying themselves out of the deal. Then you have PSG completely distorting the economics with their Qatari billions. Wouldn't surprise me if more teams cut back so as not to end up like Lyon and Bordeaux.
