I don’t post on Facebook anymore and its quote a dreadful site. But I’ve recently discovered a group on there called Realistic Railway Modelling.

I simply look at the pictures of other people’s models and I tend to be really impressed. Plus all of the comments are quite supportive with people offering constructive and kind criticism. A grown up group for gentler people.

In search of something a bit more 'mindful' than doomscrolling all evening I just bought a couple of £6.99 Airfix kits - a Spitfire and a Mustang - in Lidl... I'm 58 and yes, the wife did give me *that* look.

It's lovely how supportive and positive the modellers' groups are, as opposed to the WW2 aircraft buffs ones (I think you'll find that's a Mk15 with the Watson-Winks canopy and clipped wings rather than the Smith hood and drop tanks etc) and I assume the railway ones are the same.

Those childhood hobbies were in many ways quite wonderful.

I’ve always enjoyed looking at model railways. Even got as far as starting to plan my own and thinking about where it would go. And then I remind myself, mine would look like a dog’s dinner and I’d lose interest after a couple of weeks. I’ll just keep looking at pictures. Although I do like a good exhibition!

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

Found this a while back. Very impressive.

I like to paint Warhammer miniatures.
I have never played the game and don't intend to either. I just find the painting therapeutic.

Again, the social media groups for this hobby are extremely supportive and friendly. Plenty of folk happy to share tips and constructive critique.

Why on earth bring that to the attention of this Forum? You want some people to join and start arguing over which model is more realistic and whether the gauge is in proportion to the sheep in the background?

Only kidding, by the way. Glad you have found it and may it inspire us to all be that much better behaved on here, too!

I collect vintage Action Man and same applies - there are several FB Groups and the vast majority of folk are happy to help each other out, share ideas & tips etc. Hardly any negativity on there. I think that’s partly coz we are all gents of a certain age who are all reliving their childhoods! 😬

Cheers,
JK
