Tennis is an odd one - more women play doubles than men and when that’s taken into account they play as much tennis as men. The only reason that they don’t is due to the historical belief that women wouldn’t be able to play five sets.

The main argument now against women playing five sets is due to logistics as it’ll be hard to schedule in more matches if women’s matches could potentially last longer.

There was talk of doubles etc having their own tournaments in order to accommodate women’s five set matches.

the major argument against women playing 5 sets in the Grand Slams is that their games would take up too much show court time, especially in the first week of the tournament. It's clear that most spectators prefer to watch the men, who are obviously of a much higher standard. Watch a show court at Wimbledon become half empty in the first week when a men's match is followed by a women's. And look at the black market prices for the men's versus the women's semi finals. Amelie Mauresmo, a former women;s grand slam winner, was criticised by the PC forces for continually scheduling a men's match in the key evening slot at Roland Garros.
A sensible compromise would be to make the women play best of 5 sets in the quarter finals & beyond, when court time isn't such an issue. The idea that women aren't physically capable of playing 5 sets is laughab;e.

I know I wasn't the only one comparing it to our shootout with Luton in the ZDS Cup in 1991/92. Both sides seemed unable to score. I suppose it's a mental thing, missing becomes contagious.
