Eating/drinking in Kensington 11:00 - Jul 23 with 1149 viewssoupytwist

Does anyone have any suggestions for pre-concert at the Albert Hall eats/drinks please?

We're likely to be travelling in on the Central Line from the East so don't mind getting off the tube and back on again.

Thanks

Same here, closer to Haverhill init.

You could actually treat yerself to a take away pukka pie ( I'd go for the classic steak an kidney but the world's yer oyster when it comes to pies) an chips from Bennys in Haverhill High Street an quickly drive back to Kedington to eat it.

The thing is once you've been to the bright lights of Haverhill why would you return to Kedington? It's hardly Hundon or Sturmer is it?

Hi Mate - loads round there, my former manor.

Naturally budget and cuisine type are the key questions.

But there are plenty of great pubs that do food about 10/15 mins walk further west, close to high street Ken.

In no particular order, I could suggest:

- The Abingdon - more of restaurant now but great food, bring your wallet though!
- Scarsdale Tavern, best pub in London IMO, Fullers owned too so won't break the bank.
- The Holland - good all rounder but leans more gastro pub.
- Builders arms, favourite of the after work crowd, quite "yuppie" but good atmosphere and probably closest to Albert Hall.

Beware the £8 pint though!

Let me know if you want anything more specific.

The Queen’s Arms is brilliant and round the corner but fills up pretty quickly

Thanks nrb

Will take a look at those. Any slightly more restauranty recommendations welcome, no particular cuisine and not too eye-wateringly expensive please.

No worries.

Probably best bang for your buck is Ivy Brasserie on High St Ken.

https://ivycollection.com/restaurants/the-ivy-kensington-brasserie/

Nice people, interesting decor, easy location, food (relatively) inexpensive for that part of town.

They also have things like pre-theatre set menus too which might work for you depending on timings.

No, but Barnardiston runs it quite close, as does Stradishall.

I obviously love the the Barny Arms as much as the next man, but problem is where do you go from there?

Think it's also fair to say that Stradishall as very little to offer beyond somewhere to rag old stolen Honda 50,s about on the disused airfield behind Highpoint

There is/was a very good greasy spoon cafe at Stradishall if bacon, egg, beans and a fried slice is what you are after, but I haven't been for many years so I can't say it it is still as good.

Oh, what memories! This is where we all me up after any morning exam in Imperial College. Needless to say, I gave up first and was in the Queens early for several pints of Bass.

Gloucester Road has quite a few places to eat/drink, only a 5min walk away...

Not off the top of my head sadly - nearest place round there is probably Loftus Road!

I can however promise you the best sausage roll of your life just up the road at a place called "Supermarket of Dreams" next to Holland Park.

Yes we are, for the first time.

Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto is the main feature.

Went there a few weeks ago. Spent the afternoon in the Natural History Museum (tiring as it's hot in there), had a pint in a pub on Thurlow Place, before heading up to the RAH. Might have been Hoop & Toy, it was ok.

Through Kedington’s lanes where the tall nettles sway, The tractors wave slowly and hedgerows hold play.

The Stour meanders by whispering grass, While barn owls chart dusk as the muntjacs dash past.

The church tower hums with midsummer breeze, And crows in old treetops conduct symphonies.

Foxglove and bindweed in tumble compete, Beside footpaths where wellies and dog walkers meet.

Benny’s pie scent drifts over rooftops low, With steak and kid’ney in gravy’s soft glow.

And Stradishall’s edge in the twilight is bold, Where stories of Honda 50s are still told.

From Cherry Lane gossip to Barnardiston cheer, The countryside dances, sincere and sincere.

Cracking old school pub isn’t it? Stories like that make me wish I was clever enough to go to uni

There are loads, lots of very good pubs down tiny streets or in mews around there, just walk off the main road and obvious pubs as they do all get busy but ive always founded a spot.

Queens arms, Gloucester arms, Anglesea Arms, Builders arms... tell me if you're spotting a theme ;)

The Churchill arms is worth a look, especially at Christmas, but is tourist pricing.
