Cheap option for them I would think for a potentially good striker. If he does well then (assuming the have the money) to make it permanent for £27m is good money these days. They could always buy & sell him on if not!

Possibly because it's entirely spin from Old Trafford. Ten Haag wasn't of the calibre to manage there, neither, on the face of it, is Amorim. With all the other behind the scenes crap, he's not been able to perform to his levels. Not helped by being forced to play with guys who would have been out of their depth playing for us. |
I think he's struggled with his confidence. Not basing that on anything other than watching his general demeanor, but when you're a young lad on wages that place extra pressure on you (granted, he took those wages, but there's no doubt they add an extra layer of pressure), with a coach making you a scapegoat, in an underperforming team (with all the fan abuse/pressure that comes with it) and a media constantly digging you out, it's hardly surprising that it'd all become too much after a while. He certainly won't be free of pressure at Barca, but I'd imagine a fresh start will be good for him. New media, new fans, new team. Even at Villa he looked to be improving but he still had the baggage of 'being Marcus Rashford' in the UK.

They probably are paying most of his wages but not all. He isn't going to Barça to sit on the bench. They wanted Nico Williams earlier in the window to play on the left. He may have used the interest to get a new long and lucrative contract at Athletic Club but Barça were clearly looking for someone to play on the left. The added bonus is that Rashford can also play central which wouldn't have been an option with Williams. There was also talk of Rashford joining Barça last Summer so with the Williams deal falling through it was a pretty obvious loan to be made. |
He was probably third choice behind Nico and Luis Diaz. As you say the ability to cover in the middle for the Polish tractor and Ferran Torres is pretty handy.
