Post pub musing… If Hirst stays fit he should have a career year! 05:58 - Jul 26 with 1211 viewsJoey_Joe_Joe_Junior

Think the second half of last season went a bit understated how well he done when called upon because of the terrible form we were in. Saw enough to think he could be decent in the PL let alone Championship. Chelsea and Everton away are games that came to mind.

Obviously need another striker but if he plays over 35 games, look out.

How’s he looked pre season so far overall?

Also is Jack Clarke going to play on try right hand side? That’s twice in a row now isn’t it? Or just experimenting? Glad to hear Philogene had a good night! Haven’t seen any of the two games outside of the limited highlights.

Agreed, not looked a the stats but his goal involvement ratio per minute played is likely better than Delap's.

I think defences find Hirst an ever present threat and that ties up at least two to our one. Al-Hamadi does it too but to a lesser extent, although he did have the look of someone who would chase a crisp packet in the wind last night (but only for a short run.)

Jack Clarke looked very dangerous and Philogene brought something to the game that I don't think even Omari brings, a mastery on the wing in the middle third of the pitch and then a driving run in on goal, it's why he scored twice. I will be disappointed if we do not sign another striker but not devastated.

I think his link up play, especially with Szmodics, will get us a lot of goals. Let’s hope they both stay fit. Hirst has a very high ceiling I think - he could really do with a 50 game season as the main man.

We absolutely must sign another striker - if Hirst is injured, which has happened fairly regularly we are down to Al Hamadi. We have under Kmac always rotated our striker every match, we need two of a similar level.

The only Muff in Town.

15 goals for Pompey in 20/21 in league 1 looks like his best year.
Could easily get 20 IF he can stay fit with the amount of talent playing behind him

Yep a Hirst injury and we're down to rotation between Al-Hamadi and Tom Taylor / Buabo, or a better known 10 who McKenna doesn't consider to be a 9 in his system. That rotation problem emerges if Al-Hamadi becomes the injured party too.

No we have to sign another one, it will be almost malpractice not to.

Hirst is so underrated perhaps because of his injuries to an extent but in any case his goal return has never been incredible. But that misses what he brings to the side. He's a brilliant striker and focal point. He's a rare breed of unselfish forward who runs his socks off and does everything pretty well.

I think he has really developed his goalscoring craft now. He is becoming a complete forward. Maybe dare I say it his career journey looks a little similar to Daryl Murphy. He's believing in himself and a bit of a late bloomer where his physical side: Pace, Strength, rubbing power is not coming together with his talent.

He can be a 20 goals striker and still bring others in if he can just stay fit!!

Imagine if we added a prime Daryl Murphy to this side, that would be something else.

Yes, I'm sure he'd love it in a McKenna side. Don't ask me to pick one of them though between him and Hirst :). Hirst is getting better and better.

Do not panic, Mr. Mainwaring - we have Szmozdics and Jack Clarke who can play up top at a pinch. Yes, the right striker is our paramount transfer target I would expect but we don't have to sign any old player (for example Broja) for silly money. Even if we have to make do with a loan from the Premier League once those teams have gotten their squads straight it is better than being rushed into a panic buy.

I feel like Hirst could Beast the champ. He’s got better each year and risen to each challenge. He’s stays for and we get promoted.
