I've also heard him described as a little lightweight, is this putting Premiership teams off? Under Mckenna he'll develop so I'm not worried. In fairness I am inclined to think we're in with a shout of getting him. Added to this Middlesbrough clearly need cash.

But it may put his suitors off.

Fine for the Championship next season and will be a real hit in the PL. I'm surprised an Everton type club haven't taken a punt on him. I really hope this one comes through.

It’s him making his mind up where he wants to go and seemingly sitting tight as long as possible to see if a premier league move materialises.

For this reason I feel we should be trying to sign a player that wants to come to ipswich! Not one who needs a week to think about it

We’d never be able to build a team if that was a requirement. These are professionals just weighing up their next job opportunity. It doesn’t mean players can’t become very attached, but even then most will be off when someone offers them more money (see Morsy).

Any move has to be right for the player. It is a little disappointing that he is taking his time, hoping for something bigger. If a Premier League club doesn’t come in for him and he becomes an Ipswich player I am sure he will give 100% to the cause and will be a better player for it.

That's not quite how I read the Morsy situation. It wasn't that somebody offered him more money so he was off, it was that Town indicated that they weren't going to offer a new contract when the current one ran out, and wouldn't stand in his way if he could get an offer from elsewhere that would secure his future. It is also likely that he was told that we would be looking to acquire new Central Midfielders and that he would be a bench option if he remained for the rest of his contract. I also think that becoming a lightning rod for anti-Muslim hate had an influence. I wouldn't feel safe, and more importantly wouldn't feel my family is safe, if I became a hate target for the Twitter mob. Put those two things together and you get the outcome that has resulted. In pure playing terms, he would have been a very attractive option for clubs like Wrexham and Birmingham (and could have lived close to his wider family playing for either) for example, but I see his move as being as much about wanting to live in a country more aligned to his cultural values, and where his family would be safe from Twitter trolls and right wing agitators, as being a Ronaldo style "one last payday". | | | | Login to get fewer ads

There’s plenty of players out there who would be desperate to sign and jump in their car immediately given the chance. The problem is most of them won’t be as good as what we’ve got already. Finding that balance between measurably better than what we’ve got and keen on the move is a relatively small pool of players. The likes of Hackney will know they’re perhaps only a broke chain or sale away from an Everton or Palace making an offer, so understandably want to take their time.
