| Were we this arrogant when we got into the Championship? 18:45 - Aug 4 with 9610 views | Kievthegreat | So I was seeing what they were saying on the Birmingham forum about Akpom and this one caught my eye: "Win-win for us. If he goes to Ipswich, then they're getting a player whose commitment to their cause is such that he was happy to go to perhaps 2 other teams until he gets swayed by a team with 1 fluke season in 20 that couldn't give a toss until they found some spare change to throw at him, and would be a deleterious influence on the squad. If he comes to us, he wants The Project." Reason I find it amusing is that Birmingham are the same project as us, but 2 years earlier. Our "Fluke season" is basically their plan going forward. Now I get that they've splashed the cash in league 1 more than we did, but did anyone here really think that players should pick us over Leicester, Leeds and Southampton when we got to the Championship? I remember being confident about us being a dark horse play-off team when we got back to the Champ and people pillorying one of the football podcast-y people who put us finishing 3rd (IIRC) and giving them a lot of stick because he was a town fan and obviously biased. Not really a big deal, but just thought it interesting how the landscape has changed for the teams too big for League 1 when they get back into the Championship. | | | | |

Not sure Birmingham can be called "tinpot".

I can't remember hearing any arrogance or overly high expectations going into that Championship season. Most fans would settled for play-offs very happily and been pleasantly suprised to be there. Could be wrong though.
| Were we this arrogant when we got into the Championship? on 17:45 - Jan 2 with 466 views | Smoresy | As mentioned above, very different owners. We were promoted "not to make up the numbers", but without the impression we'd be funded beyond the level of wealthier non-parachute clubs. You can only invest what you generate + £13m after all, roughly speaking. It had also been some time since a L1 - CH double. Wagner has repeatedly stated that Brum are breaking revenue records in the Championship, financed almost as well as those receiving parachute payments. He's also drawn up that chimney circus monstrosity and claims they'll be in the Chumpions League in X years time. Brum fans also have the recent example of ourselves to draw on, and they tore up L1 more consistently than we managed. I don't think they're behaving abnormally tbh once those factors are considered. Were they under the previous ownership still, I doubt we'd be hearing a peep out of them (indeed there wouldn't be many of them to hear a peep out of!). | | | |

I think that the general view, was that we 'could' make the playoffs, but I think most of us were hoping for 6th at best. I think that's part of the issue with the poor atmosphere at Portman Road this season, very different set of expectations, and HMS P*ss the League has been in dry dock for repairs since August.
