the Most Guardian Headlnes Ever, An Occasional Series. Part the fifth9possibly) on 23:34 - Aug 5 with 641 views | ArnoldMoorhen | That's one of the shttest articles I have ever read. Sneery journalist seems to be oblivious to the fact that loads of London restaurants (and plenty in other cities) do early evening set menus, often listed as "Pre-theatre" menus. Then she references one "savvy" restaurateur who has put on an early evening menu. That's not a new thing! And they do this precisely because people like her book for 8 or 8.30pm, and this means they can get two sittings in and might, just, make a profit this year. The story isn't about Gen Z, it's about restaurants moving towards more price differentiation in order to stay solvent when many of their customers have their discretionary income squeezed.

I suspect it's not a new phenomenon but the whole 'look how rubbish' the young people are' thing that section of the press have going on is particularly unpleasant right now. Speaking as a middle aged person, if I'm occasionaly baffled by stiff that young people are into, that mostly says the that The Kids Are Alright, if it helps.

This article is a thing of beauty really, in that it manages to get in a good sneer towards virtually everybody: Blameless young people doing their best in a horrible economic environment Commuters (ie the majority of ordinary people working in London) The working class (who've been having their tea at 5pm since the dawn of time and who are presumably dragging the average down, the oiks)

I prefer to eat later but over the years we have tended to eat earlier if going out with the family, due to so many places doing a ‘pre theatre’ set discounted menu.
