Four linesmen? 21:08 - Aug 30 with 578 viewsZx1988

A thought crossed my mind during the game today.

With everything that goes on on a football pitch these days, and everything the officials have to be alert to, does football need four linesmen rather than the current two?

Two on each side, one in each half. In each half, one could be tasked with monitoring the line, whilst the second is free to monitor everything else.

You'd get an extra angle on decisions that might be obscured to the referee and the one linesman, and you'd get better observation of penalties given that the single linesman is currently tied up with watching the keeper's feet.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

I have often thought this, not lease because the linesman often has a second job to do which is help the ref with evidence of what they saw. So a foul on the right wing the linesman may see and could get punished, but on the left wing where the linesman can't see has more chance of getting off. I always thought it a weird asymmetry in adjudication.

Think there would be a recruitment problem. Especially if it were extended down the pyramid.

Mmm why don’t we have a system that uses cameras to monitor the game?🙃

I'm pretty sure FIFA trialed additional linesmen at a World Cup a few years back, but it never went further than that.

No, you need two referees like field hockey.

Problem with ARs now is that once you get above step 5 the standing rule is “leave the game to the referee” so they do very little assisting.

Every league and every level complains about referees. It isn’t the referees it is how the game expects the officiating to be accomplished.
