I want McKenna to be here for years to come 10:36 - Aug 31 with 512 views | CopfordBlue | Even if we do what we did in Keane’s first full season and go until the end of October before we win a game that won’t change. I never rated Lambert, Jewell was a busted flush years before he joined, I wasn’t convinced by Cook (good eye for a player but we needed more), I made up my mind about Hurst as soon as he started throwing players under the bus when we lost a league cup game and as much as I thought Keane was a good appointment had to accept after a few months we’d got that one wrong too. McCarthy got results but the football was unwatchable at times. I’ve probably missed a couple but that’s my overview of our managers over the last 15 years. KM has done more for this club in less than 4 years than the rest of them did between them. He has to be a much better manager now than when he joined, like all of us , he’ll learn from experience. If the club were to do what a small minority seem to be angling for and get rid of him, who comes in and improves us long term? I can’t think of anyone. Despite all I’ve said though, I maintain that he’s got more wrong than right over the past 18 months. His tactics have been questionable on multiple occasions, recruitment (both in terms of who the club have bought in and for how much), the speed with which he dismantled a successful team etc. I don’t see every comment made on here that in any way questions any aspect of what we’re seeing as being from a “div”, “budgie”, someone who should “crawl back under their rock” or whatever other witty response a poster wants to leave, safe in the knowledge that dozens of others will like. There are a handful of posters who clearly look to agitate, get a response and stir things up. Most of those who who are questioning things now though don’t fall into that category. They love the club, want the best for Ipswich Town at all times and maybe just want to discuss what they’re watching. Football is the game it is because it gives us something to talk about. It’s becoming increasing clear at the moment that a section of those who regularly post on here, don’t want that, they’d rather use it as a platform to show that they’re “real” supporters by trying to ridicule anyone who questions any aspect of what’s happened since May 2024.

Some players from division One weren't good enough for the Championship and likewise from the Championship to the Premier League. Now back in the Championship the turnover in players has been huge due to players on loan leaving, players not accepting short term contracts and no doubt a few who will be loaned out or sold by tomorrow night. We all expect with the massive outlay for new players that we shouldn't be just out of the bottom three. But given that so many players need forming into a team it isn't surprising. McKenna is still the same guy we lived for two promotional seasons. We should in no way be writing him off after four games.

I'm sure we thought the same about Burley in 2002/03 at this stage. Circumstances change quickly in football and, after the considerable net spend, there will be an expectation to get a return. As with Cook, if it doesn't seem to be working, Ashton will be asked to wield the axe. But we are a way off that for the moment. [Post edited 31 Aug 10:49]

No player or manager can point at what happened here 10+ years ago. McKenna has been backed and paid extremely handsomely for it, so it's not unreasonable to expect him to do better than those you have mentioned. Time will tell, but football is more of a results based business now than ever before.

As I’ve said previously I think he’s got this season to get us back to the PL. American business, and like it or not we are a business now, isn’t known for its patience and a lot of money has been spent on McKennas say so. He’s been backed all the way and isn’t going to have anywhere to hide if he doesn’t succeed.

KM needs time to blend these players (10 new this window, and 8 from just the last 12 months) into a cohesive unit. However, as others have said, time will be measured in weeks, not months. Equally, remember it took him half a season to really get that double-promotion side purring.
