Everyone is a bit of stretch, although it did happen a fair amount. It is a very dangerous thing to do. A doctor from Halesworth died from it a couple of decades or more ago.

I doubt many use chip pans nowadays but if they do, a wet towel is your friend or carry the pan outside to burn out away from danger. Whatever you do, don't put water on it. That spreads burning oil everywhere! | |

it was a privilege to have watched him all those years ago. Such a shame his career was cut short so much by injury. What an animal he was.
Another freak injury he had was over-straining while on the toilet, pulled a stomach muscle.

A can of four star was pretty much standard equipment for bonfires (not the big boring display ones) when I was a kid, if it had been raining as it invariably did before bonfire night.
My dad would bung half in as close to the middle as he could get it. Light it and burp on the rest if it wasn’t going to plan.
Mind you on one occasion he did burn the neighbours fence down with a Catherine wheel. That was exciting - took him and a couple if neighbours a while to put it out. Was better than the bonfire!
The bloke whose fence it was got a bit annoyed. No idea why - he got a brand new fence out of it. My dad disliked him anyway. He came from Yorkshire, was loud, had a caravan and his family was always on the ‘party line’ (you had to share telephone lines in those days).
As for chip pans, my mum burnt out half the ground floor of our house and smoke damaged the rest with one of those. It was fantastic excitement for me - two fire engines!!! Fortunately Top Cat (Boss Cat in the U.K.) had finished so I didn’t miss anything on the tv and got to stay at my friend’s for a few days - she was a better cook (and safer) than my mum.
After I left home, she had another go but only put a hole in the ceiling that time. I think she got a fire blanket onto it which was pretty ballsy looking back.
Are there such things as chip pans now? If there are I suspect they’re a tad safer which is no bad thing. | | | |
