Quite an interesting poll regarding support for the royal family/ monarchy. 17:57 - Sep 18 with 2617 views | MattinLondon | The poll in question is a few days old but it makes for interesting reading - support for the royal family seems to be declining. I’m not expecting the country to become a republic within the next ten years (actually can’t see it happening within the next fifty years) but once the older generation dies out support for that particular institution might well fall sharply. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/monarchy-support-record-low-trum

Quite an interesting poll regarding support for the royal family/ monarchy. on 11:08 - Sep 19 by Ryorry | Yeah, cos most people in their mid 70s with serious health issues still regularly work in full employment |
That is very obviously their own choice and they do it to protect the brand and the family. 'Stoic old billionaire works a bit to protect his family and keep the system that gives him a life of luxury.' Hardly a noble example of putting the country first. Your getting me all militant now!! I'm honestly not dead set at removing them, but that they are held up in any way as an example to the commoners to look up to is a bit vomit inducing! I'd actually prefer they stepped back and retired similarly to us, pass on the baton, keep it fresh, small, more normal. As I said, this wouldn't be good for brand though.

Indeed, I wouldn't mind the royals quite so much if they weren't the subject of endless media (and politicians) fawning over them.

Quite an interesting poll regarding support for the royal family/ monarchy. on 11:18 - Sep 19 by leitrimblue | Would be nice to begin with if they were just held to the same laws as the rest of us No abusing children No handling stolen goods No stealing of antiquities Perhaps paying a bit of inheritance tax etc Just the basics really |
Yeah, obviously all Presidents (who would presumably replace the royals if we went down the republican route) always follow those rules & never make new ones ensuring, eg, that they can't be impeached; or that if they are brought to a court of law for their crimes, those courts are filled with judges who are their allies/sympathisers ... Etc.

OK, so what you are suggesting is we should all turn a blind eye to the child abuse, theft of antiquities etc. Because any replacement for them may also have paedophiles in the family and attempt to get away with a bit of robbery? I'm not sure that's the strongest argument for keeping this antiquated, elitist system in place. Unless I misunderstand and you've gone full Red Ryorry and your suggesting that the elite/ruling class can't be trusted and we should eat them all. In that case I'm all with yer

I did wonder what Prince Andrew must be thinking about Trump's state visit. Both heavily connected to Epstein and a lot of smoke but no real proof* they ever did anything. One banished and one given our highest honour. *I know they paid his accuser off that's still not proof (unless i've missed something). Lots of famous people seem to pay out. I'm sure some of it is just to avoid the hassle.

That's not really my favourite Royal fantasy. That would be the in which my cell door opens and the screw proudly announces, say hello to your new cell mate/ prison wife Leitrim. While Andy slowly wanders in sweating.. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Pretty obviously (as my entire posting history on here has spelled out to any reasonable person reading it objectively) I have not & would never suggest any such things as are in your first para. I believe you're one of the people who want our monarchy replaced with a republic, so what I'd like from you and others with the same view, is to come up with better alternative/s. I have suggested on previous threads re monarchy v. republic, that local communities nominate individuals who've given sterling community service over years, to be put forward to a public vote, with the successful candidate being given a 'reign' of say 3 years each.
