The Suffolk equivalent is the Aldeburgh Festival which is not held there but in Snape Maltings, which is not in Snape but is in Blaxhall. I'll shut up now.

The Aldeburgh Festival was 19 years old when the first concert at Snape Maltings took place. Two years later there was a major fire at Snape and only the outer walls remained. QEII and the Duke of Edinburgh contributed to the rebuilding. Even now there are still a few events in Aldeburgh - and indeed in other venues in E Suffolk

Edit: I thought they used to have a boat hire that was on the Wroxham side of the Broad, but if they did, it's gone! [Post edited 22 Sep 12:04]

Growing up in Tunstall, I was always told the Maltings is actually in Tunstall, not Snape. I believe Tunstall's boundary goes right up to the bridge, then it becomes Snape, hence all the forests right up to the Maltings are known as Tunstall Forest :)

I was raised in Snape and I agree with what you say. Blaxhall is a bit further to the North West. Interesting fact (or not). Sugar beet was first trialled at Snape as it was thought to be similar terrain to Holland where it was grown a lot. Trial was successful and it was rolled out to the rest of the UK where appropriate. As a kid I watched filming of a Doctor Who episode (Tom Baker and some marsh monsters) at the marshland surrounding the Maltings. Another time followed Prince Charles (as was) and Mr Gooderham (the owner) on a tour of it as he was explaining future plans to make it what it is today. Not the festival hall but the retail, music school, accommodation etc. Not sure what the pair thought about this young scally following them around but they did not seem to mind.

Chelmsford City Racecourse being known as such despite being between Great Notley and Great Leighs, and about as close to the middle of Chelmsford as Maldon, irritates me. They only get away with it because it's just within the borough, which now has city status... 😠

Q. How do you hire a boat? A. Wait for the tide to come in. (Works better verbally and if you're a redneck.)
