Car Garages - Help 16:47 - Sep 23 with 768 viewsVaughan8

I just want to ask the TWTD Hive about what I can do.

To cut a long story short, this Garage near(ish) me in Bedfordshire, I bought a used car from them in January and soon after I found the oil in the engine was "burning" (no leaks) and being used up pretty quickly.

I've taken backwards and forwards to this garage since April with their communication once the car is in the garage is the worst i've ever had. I phone thir number and there is no answer. I talk to their "chat" online, they say they'll ring me, never do.

I complained a few months ago and got a call back the day after.

Now finally the car is getting a new engine (under warranty) and they said they needed 10.5 hours (so lets say 2 days). I took it in last Monday (15th). They still have it, and I've had no communication. I can't get through at all despite calling mutliple times a day since Thursday. So i've just made a complaint on their website again so hopefully I get a reply soon.

I apprecaite its only been 7 working days (9 days in total) and I can WFH for my job, but there are certain things I can't do at home so going in the office twice (or more) a week is really needed. Public transport would probably take me about 2.5 hours with various buses/trains etc and no direct line.

I suppose my question is:-

Can I do anything else?
And if say I temporarily hired a car, i'm not going to be able to claim this back off anyone?

The garage is about 30 mins drive away so its not like I can even just pop in there. Its thoroughly frrustating.

Write. Says that you now consider time to be of the essence, remind them of their time estimate, say that will reject the goods and start small claims proceedings if you do not have the vehicle in full working condition by X date.

The replacement of an engine seems a pretty big task, and they have to fit it in with all the existing bookings, so a week or so doesn't seem especially bad to me.

Indeed, I took my car in to the garage today because of problems with the clutch, and now that they have looked at it, they have told me it needs a new gearbox which they need to order. As they have to fit it in with existing work they told me it will take a few days before it is fixed even though the job itself may not be that long.

I am not convinced you would be able to claim for the cost of a hire car (subject to any provisions in the warranty), so my advice would be to suck up to them and see if they would let you have a courtesy car until it is fixed.

I certainly agree that two days for an engine change is pretty swift.

Though I might have rejected the vehicle the moment an engine change was necessary....

Id certainly ask for a courtesy car.

This briefly explains the legal position and given how quickly the problem emerged, they seem obligated to fix it, which they are sort of doing. Beyond what you’ve done, I’m not sure what else you can do.

https://www.themotorombudsman.org/knowledge/what-are-a-consumers-legal-rights-wh

There’s no harm in asking for a curtesy car and given this has been a problem since you bought it they may let you have one. Worth an ask. The alternative is wearing the cost of car hire yourself for they days you need to go into work.

I don’t know how old the car is or what it is, but I had a similar problem with an 18 month old car years ago (I was insane enough to buy a Rover 214. No wonder that company went bust). It happens, sadly,. Once they’d fixed the problem, I got rid of the car as soon as I could and wore the loss.

Hopefully you’ll get your car back soon.

Having a courtesy car would have meant me having to wait another month or 2 to get the car fixed. The whole process is ridiculous.

I don't think you can "reject" the car unless its within 30 days. After than you have to let the dealer attempt to fix it, I think anyway.

They booked it in and said it would be 10.5 hours work. When I asked how long they would have it, they said it would be a couple of days. I'm guessing they've over promised. The whole department seems very unstaffed.

Short term righ tto reject- 30 days. Yes.

Long term right to reject generally requires you to have given a reasonable opportunity to repair. If we are going back to April, I think thats long since expired!

The difference is, they've contacted you to say that!

Maybe the extra time is for them to source the new engine? Difficult to say without knowing the details, like type of car, it's age and where the engine is coming from. If it's under manufacturer warranty then the engine is likely sourced direct if the production line in country of manufacture. I've had this for a Citroen , when the water pump failed and destroyed the engine. The actual engine change didn't take very long, but they also did other stuff at the same time, like new clutch etc. The car is still going strong 80k later by the way.

Don't assume the worst, but don't be taken for a ride either.

I would be interested to know several facts,
1, how much oil per 1000 miles?
2, what is the exact make & model?
3, is it having a “new” or “another” engine?
4, what is the suggested vehicle mileage?
5, has that mileage been verified especially if it’s relatively low.
6, you are 100% sure it using the oil rather than loosing?
7, how did you pay for it? Card? Finance?

As has been suggested ask for a courtesy vehicle as it’s now over the suggested repair timeframe.
Then once the above questions are answered I might be able to suggest options.

Funnily enough, the car is a Citroen!

Its taken this long to set an appointment booked in because they've ordered the part and it was there, so I brought it in Monday. Just seems like everything is slow motion with them.
To be honest, it takes as long as it takes, and i'd rather they take longer and get it right.

I just can't believe no-one answers the phone, or gives updates? If I could go elsewhere I would but obviously as its under warranty, with uk wide named garage, I have to take it there.

I'll expect a call tomorrow.

The communication from the trades now is poor in some instances. The good ones are stacked with work and the poor ones are, er...poor.

if it’s the 1.2 puretech engine shared with Peugeot and Vauxhall then these suffer with wet timing belt problems similar to the Ford 1.0 Ecoboom.

That is true but on the other hand, a warranty is involved in this case, which may bring with it extra hoops to go through.
