| | Recent promoted sides after 7 games 10:59 - Oct 3 with 1912 views | DazBoGangles | | Thought it might be interesting to see where recently promoted teams were after 7 games to see the chances of automatic promotion from where we are now versus recent history.

I only looked back to 2020/21 but since then, no side has got automatic promotion with fewer than 12 points from their opening 7 matches. Encouragingly, we're in an equal or better position than every playoff winner, with the exception of Sunderland last year.

 Ipswich 2025/26 = 10 points from opening 7
 20/21
 Watford 14 points
 Norwich 13 points
 Brentford 10 points (playoff winners)
 21/22
 Fulham 16 points
 Bournemouth 15 points
N Forest 1 point (playoff winners)
 22/23
 Sheff Utd 14 points
 Burnley 12 points
 Luton 9 points (playoff winners)
 23/24
 Leicester 18 points
 Ipswich 18 points
 Southampton 10 points (playoff winners)
 24/25
 Sunderland 15 points (playoff winners)
 Burnley 14 points
 Leeds 14 points

 Going further, after 12 games - the automatic promotion teams had the following points tallies;
 20/21
 Watford 22
 Norwich 24
 21/22
 Fulham 23
 Bournemouth 28
 22/23
 Burnley 21
 Sheff Utd 24
 23/24
 Leicester 33
 Ipswich 29
 24/25
 Leeds 23
 Burnley 23

 Therefore we need a minimum of 11 points from the next 5 matches to get back on track with Burnley in the 22/23 season - that's W3 D2 L0 from the following;

 Norwich H
 Boro A
 Charlton H
 West Brom H
 QPR A

 Doable?

It looks like a league where anyone could beat anyone at the moment. If Town or Southampton click or someone like Boro keeps going then they/we could pull away by mid season.

 Last 4 games, 2ppg

 Win tomorrow and we're 2.2ppg

We had a stuttering start, but we're far from off the pace yet.

Seems to be a lot of draws in the Champ so far this season. Haven't yet had a chance to analyse it statistically to see if it really is a higher proportion than usual.

just had a quick look at the last 2 seasons (which had very high promotion points totals)

 2023-24 25 draws after 8 games
 2024-25 25 draws after 8 games

this year 34 draws after 8 games (assuming we beat blackburn in the abandoned game!)

so on that small sample size, it's fairly high...

I don't sense we will be in for a particularly high top-two points threshold by recent standards this season, although anything could yet happen.

 | Recent promoted sides after 7 games on 14:21 - Oct 3 with 1129 views | Radlett_blue | | Pretty clear that we need to start wining more games. Boro have had a great start, but have still drawn 3 of their last 4 & I'm not seeing anyone with the kind of consistence that recent automatic promotion winners have had. Missing out on Hackney was probably a double whammy but unfortunately PL clubs are looking to sing him in January. If we can find some slightly better form now that our starting XI looked more settled, we can get up there. Winning on Sunday would be a great boost - another draw against a poor Budgie side is not what we need.

Good work! So my gut feeling is correct, there have been a lot more draws than usual (at least recently).
