Hirst struggling 15:58 - Oct 5 with 545 viewsbsw72

Hirst seems to be lacking in confidence, could and maybe should have had at least a brace if not a hat trick today. First touch is consistently heavy and seems to spend more time wrestling opponent centre halves than challenging for the aerial ball.

He mishit a couple of great chances and then put the ball across the box when 1-1 with the keeper.

When Azon came on he won more in the air and was confident enough to shoot (hitting the post) when 1-1.

I’m a big fan of Hirst but he needs to start playing a little smarter for me.

He and Szmodics look like they are lacking form. We have seen what form and confidence can do for Philogene and Clarke. Both are good players. That said, I thought Azon looked very good and I wouldn't be surprised for him to start ahead of Hirst.

Thought his all round game was good, but his finishing was terrible.

Azon made a good impact.

I thought he was decent today and had a great battle with their CBs, he’s just lacking a bit of confidence. I think his value to the team is more than goals though, and he’ll get into a decent patch of form soon.

On the other hand, I think as soon as Azon and Smozds get a goal each, we’ll be irresistible.

True, Szmodics is another one like Hirst, both working their proverbial backsides off for the team but not quite happening for them.

What is a credit to them though is that they’re always showing for the ball and chasing everything.

It will come good with the goals.

Hirst's problem is in the promotion seasons he always had Chaplin in the No.10 role, near him to lay the ball off to. Szmodics in the No.10 role is often playing up front in a straight line with Hirst. Hence Hirst has to battle more to retain the ball before he can find a Town player

Hope Szmodics, or whoever plats No.10, can learn to play that actual position - it will come I'm sure.
